I just painted a Gator blank, I used Krylon Fusion Gloss Black, I am going to put epoxy over it on the entirety of the rod.

Right now even K-Mart has Krylon Fusion in stock

Do not go to thick over the blank and do your epoxy coat at last when your guides and so forth are on.

If you go to thick with the paint you will get a memory effect while wrapping and a size "A" thread will dig in the paint ever so slightly but nonetheless.

If you want to get a color switch effect from for example Purple to green you can go with "Plasti Kote"

Harder to find but "Perl" close to Dadeland mall on US1 has it in stock.

In general

1. Paint
2. Grip and reel seat installation
3. Wrap
4. Finish (epoxy)
5. Go fishing
6. Come home with some fish wife is happy
7. Come home without fish and take the heat from wife not happy
8. Either way keep fishing

Go on mudhole or you tube and start reading up on it.

The thread size is your personal choice. You can use anything and it is not dictated by the length of the rod as long as it is not a very thin blank.

You can wrap with rope if that is your choice

8) If the blank is already black, or close to it before you paint it, you do not have to epoxy it before the wrap.

If you have it running you have to much on at a time.

I put mine in the rod dryer and sprayed it while it was turning. Very thin coats with at least 1 minute in between each coat. You will see if you do need another coat. Let it turn on the dryer for another hour and then you can take it off or turn it off and let dry 24 hours.

You can take off the color with sanding or acetone. Works for me.

Just give it a shot. I do not put a layer of epoxy over the paint before wrapping but have now found out that for some colors or textured spray paints a layer of epoxy is the way to go.

Gonna give it a try myself on the next build.
