Help Matching rods with reels
Hi ive been fishing for the better part of 40 yrs . But i live up north ( ma. / nh. ) and heading down the keys for 6 months to do some fishing and need a little help with gear . I have a penn battle 3000 ,5000, and 6000 and waiting for the battle 2's to come out to pick up a 4000. Im going to be doing mostly shore and bridge fishing and some back country looking to match some rods to those reels . Im guessing my 10' and 11' striper rods maybe a little big for down there . Any feedback on the "offshore angler rods " by bass pro or the hurricane redbone series rods ? Looking at mid priced equipment $100-$150 rage any help would be apprieciated thanx

Those long striper rods will work better for bridge fishing. Bridge fishing is different from pier fishing. You need to avoid structure. Also, you need long rod to bring the fish over the rail easily.
I will bring 11' and 12'. You will need light action 6' rod for sabiki. Also, you may add some 40 LB mono as 100 - 200 ft top shot as margin for abrasion. Braid will be cut off very easily.
I had so far no luck with offshore angler rods. At you price range, you have many choices.
I heard Hurricane redbone is pretty good but I have no experience.
For back country boat fishing ( not fly fishing), I recommend med-action St croix. You will need short butt spinning rod.
I didn't see St Croix rod at bass pro. You may have to go to Oscar mayer's.

Redbone rods are great, that's mostly what I use. I caught a 80 lb tarpon today on my redbone that's 8 or 9 years old and had no issues whatsoever I would definitely recommend them. I also have a star rod which is pretty nice as well.

i have a redbone xh 7' rated to 40lb on my battle 6000. They are pretty much the lightest rod you can find thats not over 200$ and you can feel everything. for the smaller 3000-4000 i would use the heavy rated to 30. i have seen a few break, but its mostly been due to treating em rough and touching things with them while fighting fish and big weights. they give you a lifetime warranty, all u gotta do is send a piece back to them with a 25$ check and they send u a new one no questions asked. I just got a star stellar lite 7'6 rated 15-30lb that was in your price range as well. Those tend to hold up a little better and you can just take them into the store when they break at most places and they give you a new one on the spot, only a little more expensive but still in your price range.
