Manged to get out a few times and put a few BTs on the beach this past week and last as well. Lost quite a few with one Sampo 300# ball bearing snap getting straightened as well as many blistering run drops with chunks as well as livelining. Here are a few pix 3/13-14 and 3/19-21.

New Breakaway HDX, nice rod.

Male BT.

Another male, small but frisky.

I notice a Dude fishing way down the beach that was on with a Shark momentarily only to get cut off. About 15 minutes later my rod goes off, Shark runs and then I feel a drop and then it's on again. The Shark heads down the beach and I'm starting to have to muscle this thing and it just keeps running, after several tough minutes I finally get the Shark in close enough to hand off the Rod and go in after it. On the beach a nice male BT. At this point the Dude who earlier was cut off walked over and we found that this was the same Shark that cut him off as his hook and a few inches of leader were dangling in the Shark's mouth. LOL,.... after cutting him off the Shark grabbed my bait which then got thrown and foul hooked him in the back in front of the tail. After a few pix - I removed both hooks and off he swam. The Dude was happy to get his hook back.

LOL, check out hook set.

Those definately pomps. Sharks love em. From what i hear hammers like em a lot. I went 2/3 the other night all on pompanos. 2 bulls strait up and down and lost one spinner. I like to get my limit of pomps, eat 3 and save three for shark bait. My girl and i can only eat so mucj pomps in one night and i dont freeze fish.

Nice sharks by the way guys.

True. Two weeks straight up, and in PBC it's been shut down since the March 22nd, no bait or BTs - no doubt they've moved to points north - and certainly this wind has been prohibitive. We'll see these next few days it should turn to the SE and slow down then to the SW.

There was a decent Pomp bite on Juno Beach a few days ago for two consequtive days, and no Shark bite offs!!!

im not questioning your skills but you say there bt's witch i asume is
Black Tips but those look like spinners to me. there dorsal fin looks to far back to be a black tip and the black tips i have seen have a little more black on them but im sorry if im wrong i could be wrong. just wondering.

No big deal,.... from my experience some of the smaller to medium BTs and SPs markings can be a tad vague at times. I usually try to get a good look at the anal fin marking as w/SPs there is a black marked coloration verus the opposite on the BTs. I don't pay any attention to black markings on any of the other fins. Yes the position of the dorsal is a definate trademark as w/SPs it is a tad further back and the dorsal is also smaller than the dorsal on the BTs. Certainly a few of the shots are'nt the best for the anal ID.

I got into the habit of lifting the tail a long time ago to try to help me ID the Sharks (BT/SPs) later by getting a decent look at the anal fin markings in addition to a decent profile of the dorsal as well.

FWIW: Here's a link to a recent post on EC discussing this same subject, as you can see there are a few very distinct visual examples showing some Spinners.

http://extremecoast.com/phpBB2/viewtopi ... sc&start=0

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Oz said it best:
"The markings on the anal fin should be dark black and pronounced... very noticable.

I'd say over 90% of the Texas AND Florida guys who claim Sharks as Spinners are actually Blacktips. It has been a long tradition amongst both regions to identify the Spinner species by if or how it breaches the water going aerial. Other unvalidated methods to identify between the two also causes confusion.

Overall, it is quite simple. A TRUE Spinner Shark has a very small dorsal fin, including very small eyes, and a much more elongated and pointed snout. You should be able to identify a Spinner by not even looking at the anal fin. The only time when confusion should be present is when you have young neonates or smaller pups. During this younger stage you can go by the black anal fin trick to rule out other sharks."
