Singer Island Spinner Shark 03/11/2011
Hey guys just wanna introduce myself. My name is Gabe and I have been lurking for a while. Went out on my first shark hunt and ended up on singer island yesterday morning. Bought some frozen mullet just in case I didn't catch any fresh bait. Got there at about 8:30 in the morning and saw spinners jumping immediately. Didn't entice any till about 3 hours later. Was talking to a couple of tourists when I cast out and hooked up instantly. I think i hit it on the head! It made a blistering 50 yard run and jumped 7 times. I was telling two girls that were in the water that I had a shark on that was near them. They looked at me like I was nuts. When the shark spun out the water 20 feet away from them they got the message. I was afraid they would get hurt( don't think i'll be fishing were there are too many bathers anymore). My Daiwa Saltist black gold 40 reel paired up with my 12ft6inch breakaway 1509 surf rod allowed me to put the hurt big time on this critter. Had him whooped in less than ten minutes flat
. The reel holds exactly 500 yards of 65 pound power pro(Measured by the 500yard spool I bought which the reel swallowed). Anybody know how big of a shark I can land on this rig? Anyways it turned out to be a great day at the beach. I'm a seasoned surf fisherman from New York and this black tip put anything else I have caught in the past to shame. Many thanks to everyone on the forum for all the info. Thanks to BlacktipH for the video on making a shark rig. Shark was hooked In the corner of the mouth and released immediately. I'm 6ft2 and 240 pounds. Any guess on weight?

Nice job, that is a great setup you have for casting baits for blacktips. I wouldn't trust it with catching anything bigger though, a bull or hammer will melt that reel. Hard to tell from the pic but that shark looks in the 75 lb range to me.

I would still like to take on a bullshark or hammer of 300 pounds or less to see what happens. A melted reel would make for a great pick and story lol. The person who snapped the shot was actually one of the girls that was in the water. Not as much cellulite on her legs as the one behind me lol.
