Shark rigs for casting - mono or wind-on cable?

Is wind-on cable leader castable? I want to avoid getting tail-slapped by a shark... and casting 5 ft. of wire isn't practical.
Could I use a top-shot of 100 or 150 lb mono to protect against tail-slaps? Then tie that to 3 or 4 ft. of wire?
