i just picked up a new to me 9/0 Penn Senator. I'm trying to decide what line selection to put on the reel. I am new to sharking and this is my first real bigger than a 4/0. So far i believe I am going to put a combination of braided line with a top-shot of mono. so far I'm thinking of placing 80 or 100 pound braid on the bottom, then putting a 100 - 150 yd top shot of 50 or 80 pound mono.
as for the rod i'll be using, i am going to use my Penn 6/0 tidewater. I figure it will do until i get a little extra cash for another bigger rod.
Do you guys think this set up will work for someone trying to figure out if they are going to like sharking from the beach? What do you think about the like set up? what combination would you suggest?

Sounds good. Just make sure your mono is lighter class test then your braid. This way the mono will break first and not loose all your braid.

Re: 9/0 reel and line selection
If you are just getting into it, I would suggest for the 9/0 just to load it full of 50lb mono to start, it holds an ample amount and will land most everything you will hook. A spool of mono is muchhhhhh less $$$ than a spool of braid, especially if you are just getting started. If you find out you enjoy it, or want to target larger sharks, then you could upgrade to the line and add the braid backing with a mono topshot. That would allow you to only switch out the mono topshot once it wears if you were only catching smaller sharks, yet still have the braid capacity if the big momma appears. No point in dropping a ton of coin on something you're not sure of yet. Just my .02 cents.JSheffey wrote: Do you guys think this set up will work for someone trying to figure out if they are going to like sharking from the beach?
