How much drag does a 12/0, 14/0, and 16/0 put out respectively? I know a 9/0 and 6/0 should put out about 23lbs, but I can't find anywhere any kind of information or even speculation about those reels, thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply, does the 14/0 and 16/0 share the same drag system like the 6/0 and 9/0? Also does that 65lbs come with the stock drag or did you work any magic on it? Thanks again for the help I'm just trying to get some answers. eatpop

Here is the information from Penn:

12/0 = 30 lbs of drag

My 14/0 had 42 pounds of drag. After cleaning the reel and replacing the original washers with the smoothies 5 drag stack system (#14/0 16/0 Set of 5 is $15.00). It gave me 50+ pounds of drag (my drag measuring scale only goes up to 50lbs). After almost one year of use, the drag has worned down and needs to be replaced with new washers again.

As hard as this my be to believe,my 12/0 has been maxed out to over 100lbs of drag. The reel repair man(gino)at capitans harrys is the master of penns and has been working on them for over 40 yrs.I droped it off to have the bridge replaced and max the drag.We put it on the tester the first time and the line broke at 108lbs of drag.We went for round two,at witch point the tester went to 122lbs and broke the bridge as well as the anti-reverse.He took the reel back for a day replaced the bridge for a second time with one of the older model bridges that will stand the test of time and tweked the drag just a bit more.As i said i am sure i will have alot of non belivers jump on me for this, but i can prove it,and all you have to do is go to captian harrys and tell gino you want to max you drag(make sure to tip him a 20.00 spot)and you are good to go.

swordslayer,

The drag on my 16/0 is a combination between the smoothie asbestos washers and the ht-100 washers. I just alternated them. I do not know if this leads to an increase in drag pressure, but i know it cant hurt. And yes i believe that the 16/0 and 14/0 have the same or very very similar drag system.

A mix of washers is done to increase drag,as well as add more washers.

For you guys who use smoothies in your 14/0 or 16/0, did you encounter any problems with the installation, particularly with that thick 5 stack? I know people have been having problems with this, basically the 5 thick washers don't seem to fit. I'm hesitant to buy them now for that reason; looking at the ht-100's because of that reason. There is a thin 7 and a 5 thick smoothie set right?

I had no problems with the smoothies other than it was a tight fit to place them in. The drags gave out a burnt smell after the first shark (I guess they had to settle), after that it was all great, smooth as hell. No more earthquake feelings as a big shark runs.

My 16 0 that i got off ebay came with the 5 drag washer smoothie system and i had trouble getting the ht-100s to stack up properly when i tried to replace the drag. The 5 drag washer smoothie system fits perfectly and last a LONG time.

Sorry if this has gone off topic a bit. Thanks for the information on the smoothies guys. The reason I ask is that on a Texas board there were a few individuals who were having trouble with the thick 5 stack in the 14/0s, not to mention I'm interested in using them.

What I learned is this, please correct me if I'm wrong:

(When using a smoothie thick five stack washer system) It looks like you have to throw away one each of the two types of metal washers. You will also get rid of two fiber washers leaving you with a ten-stack of washer components instead of fourteen. That ten stack, according to smoothiedrag.com should fit.

Madshark posted in the reel and tackle section that
"The only issue I had was with the 14/0. They sold me a stack of 5 washers to replace the 7 washer stack. You are supposed to throw away one each of the inside metal washers with the slot and ears. When I reassembled the reel there was some free spinning of the star. As if the stack wasn't tall enough. Once you turn the star down to contact the stack the drag is smooth and has a wide adjustment range."

Anyway just curious about the installation before I buy the smoothies for a 14/0 and/or 16/0. I appreciate your comments.
