I understand you can only apply a certain amount of drag on any reel. But it is also more then just drag. Frame and spool designed. I have fought many sharks on my Accurate 50W and 80W and both with stand the beating from the sharks I caught. Very same reel I will use to catch tunas too. I know the price is higher and does not fit everyone's budget. Since Snook Buster is wanting to spend the money I want him to research about other brand reels from himself. I have nothing against Penn reel. I have used them and do not like their design. Same goes for Avet reels too. It is only my opinion due from experience.sharkreleaser26 wrote:Bolo does have a point about the gold reels having more of high tech drag and much stronger drag, but you cant hold on to that much drag you would only be able to hold what a 12/0 or a 14/0 max drag. plus sharks put a beating on reels and the senator is much cheaper to fix.

im sure it will fit my criteria of 4-9 foot sharks maybe bigger. The reel looks great and reviews to match it. 500 yards of 150 lb power pro with a 120 lb mono topshot?

I like using 200lb or heavier mono top shot. It all depends what structure is near by. I normally use 300lb top shot but I am fishing off the bridges.snookabuser wrote:im sure it will fit my criteria of 4-9 foot sharks maybe bigger. geez. well i know the wear and tear of sand frays the line and makes it like 30 lbs less than what it normally would be. so the heavier the better!

I have bridge piling and electric poles to deal with. They are sharp and will cut your line. I only do this when I compete. I would not use this heavy of a top shot just messing around.snookabuser wrote:bolo wrote:I like using 200lb or heavier mono top shot. It all depends what structure is near by. Yes. If you keep getting cut off then go heavier.snookabuser wrote:for beach fishing i assume 130 # would be fine?

Re: Avet 50 wide 2 speed? yay or nay?
If ur just starting out shark fishing don't spend all ur cash on such an expensive reel. Buy the 12/0 and if you like it its a great reel for years to come. If you fingd that you don't you haven't invested that much in it.
BTW if your only 15 I wouldn't try anyy larger that a 12/0 really even if you can handle bigger I doubt you will want to..

Re: Avet 50 wide 2 speed? yay or nay?
The Senators and tested and proven reels. You can't go wrong with them.
However, the Avet 50W have been shown to do some damage too. The guys from extremecoast have used the 50w to land several tigers upwards from 11', as well as two 9' makos. The use of a lever drag will allow you to put more pressure on the fish, and bring it in quicker. They are also smaller than the senators, so fatigue will be less of a problem.
If capacity is an issue, go with 130 lb JB hollow core braid on the 50W with 200 yds of 100 lb mono topshot.

Sweet stuff. And why the jb hollow core braid. 150 or 130 lb power pro wouldnt work as well? and for the reel i did some calculations it would hold:Frogfish101 wrote:The Senators and tested and proven reels. You can't go wrong with them.

Re: Avet 50 wide 2 speed? yay or nay?
Well, see, power pro really isn't the best of braids. If I remember correctly, it's a 3-weave...which makes it very prone to abrasion. If you're gonna go after big fish, why skimp on the line? Plus, with JB hollow core you can directly splice your mono to the brad via the chinese-finger trap method. It's an 100% connection.snookabuser wrote:Sweet stuff. well now i can see where people come from when they dont use power pro. how much would 500 yards of this hollow core braid cost at 130 lbs?

Re: Avet 50 wide 2 speed? yay or nay?
alright did some research and that 130 lb JB is slightly bigger than 150 lb power pro but thats whats to be expected because uses the three braid thing. and for the topshot SHOULD i put 200 yards or can i go less. if i put the topshot it will only leave me with probably 300 or less yards of the JB. i can maye put like 500 yards with a 100 yard top shot then have a 20 foot 300 lb shock leader then wire.Frogfish101 wrote:I dont know the diameter of PP, but 130lb JB is .61 mm
(just putting some knowledge together dont know if that would work)

If you spool under tension, you should be able to fit 750 yds of 130 JB and 200 yds of 100 lb mono on the 50W
