What type of weight is everyone using for their paddled out baits? I've been using a brick rigged for break away. It seems to hold quite well, and its nice to not have to drag in a heavy sinker when checking bait. I'll employ a bottle to keep the bait off the bottom if crabs are an issue, which seems to help.

Just wondering what everyone else does....I'm always looking for ideas.

Ok so what you're saying is you use a brick to keep it in place, and a bottle at the same time to keep the bait off the sand? That could be interesting... Good idea. Unless the tide is ripping or rough surf. Trying to paddle it out and deploying it in some rough water sounds like a drowning waiting to happen. But then again, I like to use the most simple rigs possible. Typically I'll just use a brick as a break away as well. Or if there just so happens to be a west wind, I like to balloon baits out. It saves me the pain of having to load my kayak on top of my suv and hauling it down the beach. I like simple. I feel like too much clutter and fancy rigs will deter sharks from eating..

Hey Mark, try using spider weights like they use for kingfish pier rig anchors or get some nice shark spider weights from Sharkoutlet.com.8-12oz with # 8-10 copper wire legs. Use stingrays or cownose for bait, gig them, last all day, crabs have a tough time with them, catch all my big animals with rays on the bottom.

Why would you use a breakaway $10 lead sinker to shark fish with?
From what i've gathered people use bricks, or rocks that break away. One thing I look for on the beach to see where people have been shark fishing, when the surf gets ruff, it washes up all the bricks, pavers, rocks they been using for weights. Rocks sound the best to me. Free and plenty of them. :toast:

Not suggesting using it as a breakaway.

Hey paul! I've seen those weights...they seem like they would stick well. Are they a pain in the butt to reel in? What kind of hooks do you use? They can get expensive as hell if you get he fancy ones...

Here's a ray for ya. Got him on the whiting rod. Would have sent him back out but we were packing up for the day at that time and had somewhere to be. Ive seen big schools of cownose rays migrating north through the surf before but not consistantly. I need to go gigging on the flats for sure.

So we went out today for a while and got 2 runs but didnt get tight. You get any big ones lately? We've been getting into black tips.

Nice bait Bud,Gonna need a bigger rock :) cut him in half or quarters and got some pretty baits although I have seen some pictures of big t-heads caught in Florida with whole baits that size. I am using 20/0 mustad circles (barbless) with 400 lb steel cable (3-5 ft) and about 15 ft of Rhino red weedeater mono for leader material(got it from where your dad worked). Sandtigers and tigers are making their way thru here right now. Fishing Destin next Wed and Thurs. Got to take some fish down to Gulfarium in Ft Walton beach from here.Hook-em Mark.
