2 bait shops have now told me this, when I asked for specifics, they told me to ask Fwc why and they didn't sound too happy about it

That's weird. A while back, like in the spring of this year, I bought some live mullet at a bait shop. If that's the case must be something new or something...

I'm speculating here, but I guess it is a license issue. I.e., they don't have the proper license to be able to sell live bait.

Off to the FWC site to investigate.... :driving:

Charles - have you asked Rick at Anglers B&T? I believe he has the proper endorsements to sell live bait.

Here are the specific regs on selling saltwater species. I don't see any reference to mullet at all... Also, that bait shop on 79th st in Miami used to have them... might want to call them.

http://myfwc.com/license/saltwater/comm ... ishing#spl

http://myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/commercial/mullet/

Anyone else?

Hey Rob thanks for the links, I spoke to anglers and atlantic, two of my favorites, and that is what they told me, even though when I speak to Rick, he says they get them in sometimes... I'm so confused

Whitey's B&T in Sebastian sells finger mullet. Honestly though I would just learn to throw a net, it is pretty easy after 30 minutes of practice on your lawn.

Thanks for the replies everyone, the only problem, besides being a total googan with a cast net, is that I have no clue where to find them, they don't usually stay in one spot and time is something I am usually short on, I usually sneak out for an hour or two, but that is all I get, so that is why purchasing them would be worth the money to me, unless you guys wanna give up one of your honey hole bait spots :nilly: :happyfisherman:

Charles - I'm with you - if there was a spot close that sold finger mullet, I'd be there frequently.... I always have toooo little time.

I guess it is tougher to catch bait down in Broward then up north, I can go to most boat ramps or docks around here and 75% of the time find mullet in no time, same in Miami, I used to get them at the ramps at 27th Ave in Coconut Grove all the time.

I used to see them all the time near the boat ramps here right along griffin rd.. but no more.. its been about 3 months since I saw them anywhere near a boat ramp, i've only seen them at John U Lloyd, but they don't open until 8, so if I want to be at the pier just before sunup.. that doesn't really work out! lol

And Rob... I feel ya bro!!!

Charles, odds are if you can't find them easily, the local bait shops won't have them either. Anyways, live mullet aren't a great bait once the mullet run ends. In the winter, try to get live ballyhoo at the piers, that is the bait I've always had the best luck with once on the broward piers in the winter. Or just go with light tackle and throw Gotcha plugs or bucktails.

Just an idea. Maybe setup a live well system at your home . Just go out and net them (a half dozen) and next morning you are set to go on the pier.

Yeah I know.. its just I never seem to have luck with the other baits, everytime I use live mullet it seems like it's a fish fest! Once in a while I have a good day with sand perch.. I have yet to really catch anything but cudas with ballyhoo.... :nopity:

I was thinking about this too, maybe even a large aquarium, but I will now be searching these boards for all the pertinent info!!! Thanks guys.. like I said, I don't mind catching them, or buying them.. I just thought it was weird hearing that it was ILLEGAL for the bait stores to carry them... just odd..

there's a few spots on griffin where I live that are always full of finger mullet, have yet to try and cast net them but some day, John U Lloyd will hold most of their mullet in the back creeks especially the bridge where the boat ramp is also at.

Nothing says they can't be live, but there is a min. size so I would doubt they would sell them.

As usual with the FWC it is a mystery for you to figure out. IMOP.... Who cares, Do you really think FWC is out cracking down on the average fisherman with a 1/2 dozen mullet in a bucket headed out to go fishing? I dont think so. Get a cast net grab some bait, get some fish, go home. I learned to throw the cast net one handed by watching capt jeffs videos. picked it right up. search the mullet run on you tube.

whats with your negativity man , and if you would have bothered to read the entire post you would see this is about buying them from a bait shop , get a grip or do as you were taught .

IF YA AINT GOT NOTHING GOOD TO SAY KEEP IT TO YOUR SELF !!

here is a little of your own medicine for ya !

good for you that you can throw a 3 foot net with one hand ! buy a 6 or an 8 foot and play with the big boys

capt. jeff is like 5 ft tall the nets he throws are like 4 and 5 ft which is fine if your throwin on a big school of mullet but when you only see 3 mullet and they see you bigger is better i switch from a 8ft too a 12 ft depedning on where and when iam throwing but the 8 ft dose the job most of the time. ive never heard of it being illegal to have mullet too sell you need a lic. and that goes with any fish that you want too sell you need a lic.
