Since I am so envy seeing other peoples catching a good amount of baitfish in such a quick way beside using a castnet. So I give it a go yesterday. I was bringing them up 3-4 at a time. And it was fun.

Do have a few questions for those who used them on a regular bases.

1) Are they one time /throw away rig ? Seems like after a few dip in the water, and it is all ball up and in a little ball I could not even know how to untangle.

2) What will be a quick way to get the fish off ? Shake them off or one at a time with fingers ( Sharp little hooks ).

3) I get litle Jack type fish everytime I drop my line. Will Pinfish or Grunts hit them too ?

Thanks for any suggestion you could give.

BTW Get them for 0.99 at Bass Pro so the price is right.

Use a heavier weight and they tangle them less. Go hook to hook on them an then spin the rig around your rod once you secure the weight to the reel handle forr storage though I normally throw them away after one trip. I avoid the ones from BPS for 99 cents as they have the glow beads on them and I have had those fail to catch bait vs thosse without. To try and avoid the jacks jig them slower though they will still find it. To target grunts or pinfish tip with squid or shrimp and drop to the bottom.

I typicaally use 5/8 oz but one trick is to reel the rig in slowly keeping tension on the rig so the fish can swim the rig into a tangle.

You can also try and cut a few inch from the bottom. To have one 1 or 2 hooks less. Rig the snap swivel back in place leave enough mono on the sabiki. I do this sometimes when the horse size Pilchard/thread fins hit. They make a mess out of the sabiki-

When I say big I mean this size.

I have been using a rubber wine cork to store my used sabiki's and it works perfectly. Stick all the hooks on the end of the cork and throw it in a plastic bag.

When I land something, I stand on the bottom of the sabiki and pull it straight to keep it from tangling with the bait. I have also caught remora and jack crevalle on a sabiki, and when that happens, it is completely trashed.

I like to use the bass weights cuz they click in easily to the snap on the sabiki.

I use Marathon Sabiki but most of the time I end up swithing to Hyabusa sabikis.

Either straight down and jig it or cast somewhat out and reel in. At night go 3 foot in the shadow line top the dark. Bigger baits like to hang out in that range.
At least that is my observation.

You can always also use the old but proven way which I believe some of the old timers here still do and effectivly so.

Small gold hook on say 4lb test and go for it.

BTW: Do not jig to fast either. Get a feel for the sink rate so you keep your line tensioned. Way less tangle that way. Up your weight if it does not work out.

Also you can make your own bikis - lol - I did at one time. Guess you could tow a car with them or troll for Wahoo. - lol

Way back that was. 30lb main and 17lb branched. - LMAO
- Still hanging on the wall -
