Where are all the Live Shrimp?

Post by rickcicc »

Does anybody know what has happened to the Live Shrimp population recently? It has been near impossible to find them at local bait shops in the Palm Beach County area for several weeks now. I have not really had this issue in the past few winters. Does anybody have any info or know of good bait shops that still have them?

Thanks! I was able to get a few dozen but they are sold out shortly after they come in to the bait shops.

I am surprised at the reports of lack of shrimp. Live shrimp for bait are caught with bottom trawlers so it does not depend on when they are 'running' out of the bays and inlets to be able to catch them. In general, small tiny shrimp immigrate into bays and inlets during spring and summer. Hence, you only find small shrimp in spring and summer in the bait shops. This small shrimp grow in these nursery grounds and then in winter (after getting bigger and fatter) they take advantage of the cold fronts and strong winds to leave the bays and inlets. Could it be that this winter we had unusually frequent cold fronts that accelerated the emigration of shrimp?
