New to Boatless Fishing

Post by Braz4phish »

Hey whats going on? I just recently moved down to Stuart FL, I love to fish. I am looking for a new hobby down here of fishing in the causeways obviously without a boat. I would probably consider myself a novice fisherman. I am just looking for what I need to begin, or should I just go into a local baitshop and talk to those guys.

A fishing pole, a tackle box, a strong desire to not catch anything for a while, and patience. The rest will fall into place. :thumleft: :thumright:
There is a fine line between Love & Hate.Hate is pushing them off a ledge. Loving them means you don't taunt them after you've pushed them off.

For that area land based you have a few choices. One is fishing he bridges with your main target being snook. Two would be wading with the main target being trout, redfish, and snook. Last will be the beach with pompano, bluefish, whiting, and sharks. The inlets can also be good for a variety of species. For bridge fishingg lures or live shrimp are tough to beat for a novice. A 7 ft medium action spinning rod would be a good overall choice. I would put an 8000 class reel on it. I would use 50 lb braid and 40/50 lb leader or if mono is yourr choice 15 lb with same leader. For the beach this same outfit will work though an 8-9 ft rod is better for casting. Cut mullet, shrimp, or sand fleas will work best for the beach fished on a pompano or whiting rig. You can buy these premade or make then yourself if you know how. The above outfit will work for wading but I prefer a smaller setup as you will be casting and distance is an issue. I like a 2000 - 4000 class reel with either 15 -30 lb braid or 6- 10 lb mono with a 25/30 lb leader. Either outfit above will work for the inlets depending on what you are targeting.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Yeah I'm only at like 63 shows though.

Thanks for the info.... Im going to try and buy a bunch of gear on Wednesday. Then teach myself with the help of the interwebs to make the leaders. You guys know of any decent places to begin in stuart, I am literally a 10 minute walk to Hutchinson Island Bridge.

haha at only 63 shows, unless they are all 3.0 shows. Anyway I can't help much in your area as I'm in North Miami Beach, Sorry.

If you're ever coming down this way to fish or catch a show PM me.

I've seen 74 shows. 46- 1.0 24- 2.0 and 4- 3.0.

I don't really travel for the band anymore. I haven't seen them since Miami 09.

This forum has lots of helpful thread on how to not so much where understandably. I would search the forum for your county and start reading.

I was going to go get a bunch of gear today and try my luck, but due to unforseen circumstances, had to replace the sliding glass doors on our patio, I am just going to get some lead, lines and hooks and tie some leaders so I dont have to worry about that later.

For cheaper gear you can get some deals at the Nautical flea markets coming up. Its a bit of a drive for you but the next one is 2/23 & 2/24 http://www.keysrotary.myevent.com/3/events.htm

and the next big one after that is in Dania on 3/14-3/17 http://www.daniamarinefleamarket.com/

Lots of combos, rods, reels and tackle at both. Some custom rod makers are there selling rods and lots of used gear also.

Went out for the first time to the Stuart Causeway.... As a first timer I stuck with frozen shrimp from Billy Bones bait shop. Caught 4 Sheapshead, 2 were over 12 inches but through all back.

Gonna try my luck again tuesday but gonna move to live shrimp.
