Dry Tortugas, Yankee Capts Report Jan 2-4th 2009

Post by killula »

Went back out again, had high hopes of catching my personal best. 1st day was slow, I caught just 2 muttons using fresh whole gogs butterflied, decent size 7-10 lbs. The next morning and afternoon was alright, not the best but steady, like 1 bite every 30 mins, some being sharks. We stopped over a wreck around 3pm Sat afternoon, and every bait dropped got smashed. I saw 30 lb african pompano and 40 lb kingfish get reeled up. I landed 2 more muttons on the wreck. Sat night was insane, pods of flyers showed up and was cast nettable, we fished a deeper wreck around 180 feet and every flyer you sent down got inhaled. I ran outta flyers fast and the gogs werent getting the same amount of bites, I ended up with 10 muttons to 17lbs, 5 of them over 10lbs, small 10lb kingfish and a small 9lb dolphin that got too close to the boat :joker: Nice fishing with you Marsod (Litigator), and your crazy friends and family. Tell your brother I said thanks for the sickness patch. I beat my personal best of 7 muttons, but no grouper this time. Thanks again Greg for the awesome trip, and Marcus who helped with my gogs. I'll post pics when I get home.

Nice trip Killula, sounds like you had a good time minus maybe some seasickness.

Rob, I would think he released the 23 over his bag.

You keep your limit and release the rest. Rob, the police in the keys take pride in catching poachers.

I didn't get home fast enough to save one of my muttons from the family, lunch time = 1 nice 10lb fatty before I could snap the pictures.

I gave 1 to my mother in law, 1 to my father in law, 2 to my mom, lost 1 to todays family get together, and I kept the other 5. The dolphin and the lanes and yellowtails are in my belly atm. The kingfish is cut in steaks atm chilled, and the rest were made into nice fillets and vacuum sealed deep freezed.

That king ate a whole butterflied gog intented for aa big mutt, it was the smallest on the boat but there were some huge ones landed. A 40 lb won the pool, 2x 35lbers were caught by the another guy. And a 40lber was lost during a failed gaff. Russ if you wanna catch a smoker here's the best place to do it.

The silver fish are porgies. They are excellent eating and great amberjack and grouper bait .
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

What is a cafish?
The Judge asked the prostitute, "At what point did you realize you were raped?"
The prostitute replied (wiping away tears), "When the check bounced."

Only in the tortugas do you treat the flag yellowtails like catfish, messen with your bait.
