Re: Skyway Pier South Fishing Reports 2008 - 2009
I fished Saturday at skyway with some family. We fished from noon till about 7. I can tell you we didn't bring anything back for the table, but we did have a great time out there.
I always have a blast taking my nieces and nephew out to catch fish. They caught a bunch of grunts, a couple of Grover's, some runners and tons of bait. A couple of interesting things happened. My mom while catching bait had a tarpon the "looked" about 4' jumped out of the water to get the bait she was bringing up. In doing so it was hook with the sabiki. She had him for about 2 seconds before it broke off. So I tie on another and get back to catching bait. The bait was very thick out there. There was pilchards 3" - 7", big thread herring, & skip jacks. I was keep the threads to bring back and freeze to use later.
So our other interesting catch on another sabiki was a Spanish mackerel and lucky for me he didn't get any of the hooks in him. I think he was about 12" but I threw him back.
I did get a video of the bait school that I will try and get it posted. Till next time.

bait is scared, don't see any macks. A lot of sheepies on crabs and cut shrimp. Most of them small but there are some keepers.

Filefish possible a unicorn filefish.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.
