Its getting pretty cold at night right about now. How cold was it getting the last time a lot of them died in the winter?

It needs to stay cold for consecutive days/weeks. The lake behind my house did have a fish kill last week though, but that had something to do with oxygen levels. It wasn't very fun getting rid of all the dead fish on the shore line so the dogs wouldn't eat them.

No, not cold enough long enough... If the great freeze a few years ago did not do it this won;t even make a dent, they may go deep and hang out for a couple days.

Yep one day won't do it, and it does seem more lately they have been dying from lack of oxygen, I had that happen twice about two three weeks ago

wondering what affects oxygen level in fresh water? some kinda of algae or micro living things?

Pesticides when it rains heavy was my thought and I believe a few days ago it was very rainy. Especially if you live west where its agricultural area

I live out west so it's possible. I just thought it was the crazy amount of vegetation that has been growing. We usually have a group that goes around managing the vegetation, but I haven't seen them in a while. With that said I didn't see any dead peacocks or largemouths (not to say they weren't floating in another part of the lake) just oscars, brim, and cichlids.

I highly, highly doubt anything will die...

Whatever did not die to the 2010 cold kill simply will not die, they tend to go deep into whatever body of water they are in which is always more stable temperature wise.

Also, every single new batch of hatch lings post 2010 freeze are now more weather proof...

Same thing that is happening with the Pythons... They shouldve all died then... They didnt and are here to stay... Although I like peacocks I do miss catching a whole mess of bass anywhere you went. It is mostly chiclids now at most places.

Not that it helped any Ronny, but the Rez they ruptured was not built to last 5 decades. That didn't stop the mining company from abandoning it. Ive read there are over a thousand of these toxic reservoirs in the US.
All of which are now the problem of the US taxpayer to clean up. Kind of like "love canal" on steroids.

Dissolved oxygen levels tend to plummet when long dry spells end in heavy rains. Fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicide runoff all combine and reduce dissolved oxygen levels, while adding toxins. Roundup being the worst. Oxygen then is replaced by Nitrogen in the fertilizer as well. They basically suffocate.

Crazy. I had no idea run off was that much of an issue down here. I was tempted to see how snakehead taste but I think I'll pass.

Yes, when you fish west of a certain avenue of dade county the pesticides that runoff into the system are incredibly high, literally all the peas were dying. But if you go north in the same system it's ok, just avoid the farming district wherever you are after it rains if you don't want to see massacres every now and then...luckily it seems the tarpon hold up longer in it though.

Thanks for the responses guys. FInally got around to getting some new line and cleaning my reel up. Been maybe 4-5 years since I last fished. I suspect with this weather texas rigged worms would work best. What do you guys use when it gets cold?
