Losing fish...

Post by xmarlyx »

hey everyone, I'm new to fishing and most of my fishing is in freshwater. Only been at it for 3 weeks but and ive come close to catching some big fish only to lose them to the knot ive tied.
Just got back in from fishing in a lake in Miami Lakes area and we had a fish close to 2' hooked on a topwater rapala lure and it came up and out of the water a few times. It was HUGE! but we lost it to the line or knot. Bums me out extremely. Ive been using a improved clinch knot but it doesnt seem to work well for me. Can anyone help me out with knots i should use under different conditions? I like to have a live bait set up and a lure or worm. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Losing a fish to a poor knot is the worst feeling ever :(

To be honest the best knot you can tie to a lure with a spit ring is the palomar. It tests better than the uni to uni or the knot you are using. I don't like the cinch knot cause on really big fish it tends to slip.

Now with that said, I don't like split rings and prefer to tie a loop knot to my artificials. The loop that I like is called the canoeman knot.

Just google the knot names and you should be able to find them. Hope that helps. :thumright:

You can tell what failed by looking at the end of your line. A clean cut is the line, a frazzled spiral looking thing would be the knot.

I've tied the trilene knot with mono for many many years. Palomar is great too, especially for braids.

what lb test line are you using. Was it fresh line?

Here ya go.http://www.animatedknots.com/index.php? ... dknots.com

30 and under I use the clinch or improved clinch. I have found it really doesn't work over 30LB test line to well. For that I use a San Diego Jam knot.

I have used it with 60lb & never had the line break off so far for Permit. I use snell knot 90% of the time.
Well I guess you're just tying it WRONG! :biglaugh:

Rare,

And how do you use that "katz" thing?? Where do you get one?

P.S. When your rigging those things at home you might want to turn off a couple lights. That FPL bill is rocking! Damn power company. LoL

And it doubles as a set of brass knuckles if someone tries to mess with you on the bridge

Another thing to check, make sure you are moistening your knots well before tying, saliva is the best thing.

that fugu knot looks cool, I have two finger savers and they are awesome for tightening knots from tag ends and then add this thing, I think its a perfect combo!
