Post this question in the cooking section and you should get a response or three. I wouldn't eat anything out of freshwater in South Florida.

Well then best of luck to you . I have seen what is floating around in the local canals and ponds. I wouldn't eat anything out of the local fresh waters . I don't care who says otherwise. I catch more than enough good eating fish out of salt water than to mess with peacocks and such.

Re: Do You eat what You catch?
Have you ever looked at the garbage that is floating around in the canals you fish ? Forget the used condoms and hypodermic needles look at what is truely in the water. Oil and gas from runoff and stolen cars dumped in them. Pesticides that are washed into them. People dump the chemicals from their pools. I stopped eating fresh water fish a few years back alomg with inland saltwater species when I had an experience. I was rinsing a fillet off and watched the huge amount of oils that floated to the top of the sink. Nasty and scary, why do you think they have boil water orders down here ? Human waste is dumped right into the area canals along with the above toxins, I'll pass. People use canals and lakes as dumping grounds for hazardous toxins that they can't legally dispose of at area dumps die to pollution laws. They get around costly disposal fees by dumping them in area waterways.
The water clarity has changed in South Florida in my lifetime. Decades ago you could see the bottom and the water looked clear. The bass and bream had white fillets and no cancerous growths on them. Now the water is dirty with crud floating on top and the fish have brownish fillets. I have found black lumps in the fish fillets that are not worms that I never saw in hundreds of fish I filleted years ago.

I do not eat any fish from freshwater canals or ICW in South Florida.
The Judge asked the prostitute, "At what point did you realize you were raped?"
The prostitute replied (wiping away tears), "When the check bounced."

I'm on board W That as well - NO freshwater fish or ICW fish for any reason.
For all the reasons stated above...
Dude, do yourself a favor - release em, catch em, release em again.
Go to the ocean and meat fish.

It all depend on the water and mercury level of the fish.

i have no idea where ur fishing but the lakes i fish at are clean so are" some canals" and the fillets of the fish i catch are as white as snow.... but its true wat u said about the nasty stuff but all u gotta do is look and u can find clean places to freshwater fish...Have you ever looked at the garbage that is floating around in the canals you fish ? Be careful. Clarity is not always an indication that the waters are free of chemical pollutants and "clean".cantseeme47 wrote: i have no idea where ur fishing but the lakes i fish at are clean so are" some canals" and the fillets of the fish i catch are as white as snow.... but its true wat u said about the nasty stuff but all u gotta do is look and u can find clean places to freshwater fish...

The way I put it to others is this... if you plant an apple tree on the side of a busy/congested road... You plant the tree as a young tree... maybe 1 foot tall.. for years and years... daily, dogs piss on it, people spit on it, dogs crap on it, pesticides run into its roots, people dump their used oil from oil changes on the lawn near the tree... finally it has apples all over it. Are you going to eat the apples?
My posts are just my opinion... Gathered from my research and my experiences in this passion we all share.. Dont hate if my opinion differs from yours... We all have opinions just like butt holes

Re: Do You eat what You catch?
Back in the 80s, I used to take shellcracker, bluegill, tilapia from the local waters as a kid. Even then, I probably did damage to myself.
Wouldn't eat fish from our local canals and lakes these days. Even the lakes that look clear and "clean" aren't.
Anyway, why not leave the fish around to enjoy catching them. That's the reason why the fishing isn't as good as it once was.....too many people keeping too many fish over the years.
