Another Whatzit?

Caught this fellow at the canal this evening. Any Ideas? In 'Sport Fish of Florida' the Jaguar Guapote is the closest match, but the bars on the side don't match. He had teeth right up front like a snapper or trout.

Notice how well the single hook Rapala worked.

Managuense Cichlid. You didn't touch it did you?

They have a flesh eating bacteria slime coat, symptoms don't show up till days after contact, though.

Looks similar to a jaguar but not quite. I have one about 10" in my aquarium that I'm looking at right now, the tail is a little different.

It's a managuense aka jaguar cichlid.

Baitfish, I was joking with you about the flesh eating slime coat bacteria. The reason why the managuense you caught has those bars is because most fish, including cichlids have chromatophores located beneath their scales. They're specialized pigment cells that undergo color changes due to psychological activity. Mating can trigger it, stress can trigger it, excitement can trigger it, and so can fear. Fish also use chromatophores to provide natural camouflage to blend in with their surroundings, protecting them from prey. NO BS.

Yep, he gets a couple live shrimp whenever I have some left after a day of fishing. He decided to attack my hand last time I cleaned the tank, and actually drew a couple of drops of blood, lol. I think I need to invest in a pair of those chain mail gloves that the people that feed sharks wear.

Oh thank goodness! I had to take a squirt right after the picture and was worried about what might fall off! :nilly:

Read up a little further on the Jaguar and that is definitely one.
