Canal Bass Fishing

Post by fisherdave »

Fished 2-27-2012
Partly cloudy
SE 10-15 & Temp 81 degree
Fished from 10AM-12PM

Lure of choice, I think it’s a Booyah’s spinner bait.

Have it for a few years now and never caught anything with it yet but saw a guy on Youtube literally destroyed bass with this lure. I was hoping I can duplicate his successs. First stop was a canal by western 595. I was fishing closed to a bridge. With my first cast out, I worked it in medium speed. As I was reeling in, it was abruptly stopped mid retrieve and something grabbed it and I instinctively set the hook and connected with something on the other end of the line. The fish made some runs but I knew it wasn’t a big fish. I quickly reeled up a very colorful one pound peacock bass up. I’m never tired of these fish; they are just so beautiful to look at. Snaps a couple of photos and quickly set it free.

Cast out the spinner bait out again and about three feet from shore I saw a flash. Suddenly, there was an eruption of water and a nice peacock bass came up and engulfed the lure. This fish fought much harder than the first fish. It made a few runs and head shakes but after a few minutes the fish tired and surfaced. A three pounds peacock bass.

I was thinking to myself, this was going to be a great day of fishing. Two casts two fish, it doesn’t get any better than that. Well not exactly. The peacock bass had wised up. After casting for more than an hour with no willing participants, I decided to have a fast lunch break.

With a full stomach, I went to another canal in western Sunrise. Using the spinner bait again, nothing for the first half hour, I was getting a little antsy. That’s when I had the third hit of the day. This fish fought differently than the other two fish. It didn’t pull as hard as the peacock bass but this fish had some weight to it. A three pounds largemouth bass.

After this fish, I caught another one pound largemouth bass. But by mid day it was getting too hot to fish and I packed up for the day. Not bad for a couple of hours. :D

Nice peacocks fisherdave. I've been baggin' a few in SW Dade with X-raps, Rapalas and shiners. Nothing as big as those guys yet. Welcome to the forum.
Fishing is not a matter of life or death, It's much more important than that.
