Netting from a pier is not illlegal, it is the standard rule of most piers to not allow the use of cast nets though. Broward county has a seven foot (7') rule that is enforced. A lot of folks in this forum have two(2) nets, one for Broward County and another for the rest of the state. The max net size for Everglades National Park is ten feet (10'). There is more info inside this forum on cast netting, use the site search BF posted the statute.

Thanks for the info. They Main reason i posted this question is becuase last weekend i was in ft.myers fishing and i was issued a written warning for using a cast net within 1000ft of a bridge. The officer issuing the ticket didnt seem to know what he was talking about becuase first he said within 500ft and then he changed it to within 1000. He also stated that it was a felony charge, but would let me slide with only a warning. Do you know anything about this?

On your written warning he must refer to a number as in the law, what is it ?
Need the number so I can check, it could be a city or county ordanance.
It may even be in the special acts of Florida State law, as the 7ft Broward law is.

I got bored real quick reading that,I took away that you can not use the net within a thousand feet of the Naples pier. Funny I've been going to that pier for a very long time and never once did I see someone get a ticket for throwing their net on the beach or boat within that distance. I'm willing to bet that the cop was young and so are you. I find young cops are more eager to put a notch in their belt with a young adult. I think it's a bunch of horse hockey. Never the less we all must obey the law and this is good info.

Thanks for the website. i guess a good lesson is learned. When fishing in new areas, you better know ALL LOCAL LAWS. Im 23 years old so that may have been a factor. Ive been fishing their a few times and have watched cops just drive by while other guys used cast nets. The cop was cool though after i told him i was a firefighter.
