Fort Lauderdale may get a new fishing pier with your help
As you may already know, Fort Lauderdale has a tax allotment that have to spend on ocean front improvements. They already have improvements slated for Bahia Mar and the Swimning hall of fame. But they still have money that they can only spend on beach improvements as that was the deal in 1989 when they determined that the beach was blighted and in need of improvement. We are proposing the construction of a brand new state of the art fishing pier in the area of Sunrise and A1A. Not just another pier but the longest most advanced fishing pier in the state. Utilizing composite decking and railing materials LED lighting wind and solar power. If you live in Broward county, these are your tax property dollars. With your support we can show the F.L. city commission that the desire for a pier is there. In the end that's really all we can do. Since they are already thinking about a pier, we decided to start a petition for it. If we can get 1000 signatures or 25% of the sites membership over the next 2 week's, we could really show a desire. The link for the petition is below, your support would be much appreciated. If you decide to support the effort please type BF or Boatless in the comment box as well as any comment you may want to make.

Sure does! You don't have to be from Lauderdale or even from broward to sign this. Every signature count's! One of the points of the beach improvements is to bring back the tourism on and around the beach. To that end, out of town signatures carry allot of weight as well. And Thank's to everyone for your support.gatorjwade wrote:#17 (altho not sure if I will count since I live in Boca?)

They'll do what "they" want. Doesn't matter what people petition. A pier would be years away. Dealing with inhouse fighting on what's what. Army Corps. Turtle activists. Etc. And having it at Sunrise is stupid. Do it at Las Olas makes more sense. Stores, Bahia Mar, an d plenty of parking.
I'll petition alright. I'll petition that they never allow those dumbazz googan fake turd trollie rigs out there. They destroy the pier for other patrons and that's money lost.

Actually Zeb this is exactly how things get done within a city government. Las Olas was recently redone and is geared toward the beach. Putting a pier there would risk closing some of the buisness already established at that location. A1A and las Olas ain't broke so why fix it?Zebco wrote: They'll do what "they" want. They are already looking at Sunrise as a possible location for this. The existing tunnel just North of Sunrise from the park makes Sunrise a much better location as parking is easily expanded and nobody has to cross A1A to get to the pier. That section of the beach is far less used so there is far less disruption to the established beach community.
Yeah a pier would be a few years away. So is anything else they may do. That's how Construction work's. The design of this pier has a smaller foot print both physically and ecologically than any other pier in the state. The whole idea here is not just to build a pier, but to build THE pier! The one that the rest of the state will use as the gauge for future piers.
Everything that has been done to date as far as beach improvements are concerned, started out exactly like this, A petition. It's the squeeky wheel method of political influence. If we can show enough interest in a pier, and show how to make it profitable, environmentally friendly, and good for local buisness. We cover the basics for serious consideration by the city councel. Doing nothing is stupid and unrealistic because then your just hoping they will do what you want. Good luck with that. And yeah we may fail. So What! Not like I was doing anything anyway.

Re: Fort Lauderdale may get a new fishing pier with your help
Very true Ricky. The proposed design is round pillar long span utilizing Orthotropic beam's. Exactly like an expressway ramp's inverted "A" shaped beam. Only the pilings are larger at 72" across and cored deep into the bedrock then poured solid with 2 layer heavy steel cage. The spans Orthotropic beams are precast post tension 8" thick concrete. The end's of each section are keyed to fit the adjoining section's The idea is no flat surface to stop a wave impact. The waves just wash around with little force transferance to the structure. They still hit but the force of the wave is not fully transfered. It's reduced buy the shape of the piling and span base. You can also walk the entire pier inside the hollow of the Orthotropic beam for inspection purposes. The design also reduces overall cost as everything is made on land, then floated out and hoisted into place. Then they thread 44 1 1/2 inch stainless steel cable's through the entire structure and pull them to 60 ton tension. Your right about the insurance to. Just the cost of such a policy would make the pier cost way more than it could make in admission. So all you can do is build it well and hope for the best.Rijkaard wrote:done
i'd love to see that, my guess is that if they want to have something UNIQUE in size and innovation you need to invest something around 10 mil $, and I don't see it coming out from government unless some private contribute to the business, but a fishing pier is not a "bankable" asset since is hardly covered by insurances from acts of god (hurricanes, tsunamis etc.), it's hard to be a fisherman sometimes...

I see issues with a new pier so close to two already existing piers. The 3 piers will be a half hour drive from each other. So will the new pier cause less profits for the other two and as a result they either go out of business or the next storm that does major damage will the bottom line not be worth repairing Dania or Anglins.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Re: Fort Lauderdale may get a new fishing pier with your help
I see your point but I disagree. A new pier at Sunrise is almost dead center between the 2 your right. However Pompano just North of Atlantic is still closer to Anglens. Both piers do just fine. Anglens lost buisness to Pompano after the price increase, not due to proximinity. A brand new pier 20 min away would create the kind of competition needed to standardise prices and parking for all the piers. That's good for us as we're paying those prices.fishnfool73 wrote:I see issues with a new pier so close to two already existing piers. The 3 piers will be a half hour drive from each other. As far as storms go, who can say. I do know the new pier design will stand against a cat 5 with little or no damage at all. If they build it by that design. The storm we had a few years ago, Wilma I think, pretty much destroyed everything on the ocean. Some of the hotels were closed for over a year due to the extent of the damage. But in the end everything except the Holiday in reopened. As did the piers. Even if they wanted to walk away, they still have to remove what's left of the pier. Not knowing the pier's income number's I really can't say what they would decide. I can say with some certainty that the cost of removing what's left would be substantial. In the end it would boil down to which option cost's less. Rebuilding eventially pay's for itself. Demolishing it don't.
