Kingfish and Grouper from the yak

I've been trying to get a king, but have had some unfortunate events until today. Took the yak off Pompano since I've had good luck up there. Seas were less than 2' with a north breeze. Just past the third reef there was NICE rip and I put a gog out. Saw a couple kings launch out of the water probably 5-10' in the air. Pretty awesome to see; paddled that way and got bit. There was a sharp tug and then nothing... I opened the bail thinking it was a short strike and the fish would come back for the rest. After 10-15 seconds of nothing I reeled up the slack to find dead weight on the other end. There was no tug, no run, just dead weight. I didn't even think it was a fish until I dragged it in 50 yards to the yak. Then the king took off and decided to fight. Even then it only made a few short runs. It wasn't the fight I was expecting from a king. I thought they were supposed to be pretty bad ***. I've caught blue runners that fought harder than this king, seriously! Around 9 the seas totally layed down along with the wind. Tons of turtles around, none had cobia. A lot were mating and I got some good turtle porn that I'll probably post at another time.

A couple days ago I set out to get me a grouper so I could cross that species off the list. Got this one trolling a stretch 25' plug over the reef in around 25-30'. Both fish were released. :thumright: Tight lines and Googan Out!

Thanks guys. Yak fishing isn't hard, and neither is paddling out 2 miles. If a googan like me can do it so can you. :happyfisherman: get a cheap yak and float on out. Tight lines

I was out with a boat that day and saw you! I was thinking to myself, "wonder who is out there on that yak"...you know what's funny? You had a better day of fishing than I did! I caught a couple of sharks, an 18" Gag (went back in of course) and much of my bait was constantly bitten in half...used ;live pilchards caught in the Hillsb. inlet before going out. Sorry to hear about the bum king, that happens sometimes. I hear ya about the runners, the bigger ones have some decent fight in them.
