A bunch of people always ask me about my kayak rack on my roof... I carry 2 kayaks standing up on their side.
Heres a video on how it is done!

I have a 2rd Civic, 3rd one, and currently have Thule Aero Bar racks.. carry either a 15'4" kayak, a 14'4" canoe, or 13'6" Paddleboard. The canoe is 38 pounds so its easy, simply grab the thwart bars lift & flip, reach out and slip on the bars. The kayak and paddleboard are a little more difficult for me, kayak is 62 pounds and the paddleboard is listed at 45 pounds, since my heart problems I can no longer lift these as easily, so either is laid on the ground next to the car, parallel, lift the bow and lean it on, move to the stern grab lift and slide it on.. off its a bit simplar, grab and edge and sldie if off, hold and lay on the ground... the canoe I can man-handle and just carry it where I want with one had balanced on the shoulder.
I can go anywhere, trips up to 4 hours have been made at hi-way speeds plus a few mph. All 3 are carried upside down bow forward, line on bow and stern, plus 2 over the center at the racks.

The canoe does move around a bit in wind or the disturbed air of a large trucks.
