A big rod/reel combo is ok for soaking baits, but too heavy for in-hand fishing in the yak. All my stuff is a pound or less for pitching lures. As far as rod length, you need to be able to clear the yak from your seat, front and back. I have an x-factor. 14' long, so anything shorter than 6.5" makes it card to clear the front of the boat with a good bend in the rod. I use 25-30# combos for 6' plus sharks. With yak fishing, you wont need gobs of line, because the larger fish will pull you around, and you'll use that as drag.

Also you will not want to have the drag cranked down with a large fish on...a good sized Bonito is capable of flipping you if you fight him on the side with a locked drag.
