Looking to buy

Post by Harpmanr »

I have been looking to buy a kayak. Any input about the Pelican Castaway Fishing Kayak? Or any others that you think would be best for intercoastal/inshore fishing?

I would invest a couple more bucks into a quality yak or look for a good deal. DaLuii had a few good rigged ones for sale.

Better yet go to a good kayak outfitter - like Kayak Jeffs - test paddle a few. If $$ is a factor, test them, figure what you like then look for a used one....

Wouldn't recommend Pelican, heard some things about water getting in the hull via rivers and such.

Thanks everyone for your input. I have narrowed my search down to these three models:

Heritage Redfish 12
Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140
Ocean Kayak Trident 13

What do you all think about them?

Remember this is based on what YOU like - that being said - all 3 or those are quality tubs.

Go down to Kayak Jeffs and paddle a few...see what fits YOU. also consider what YOU can easily load and unload alone - That is a big factor....ESPECIALLY after a long paddle. ie...my scupper pro is light y all standards for a long yak....after fighting wind and current for 10-15 miles, it is a little challenging to press over my head and up on the racks of the SUV....You will not ALWAYS have help doing this, unless you purchase a loader....these are super cool, but also a few $$

Redfish IMHO is better in the 14 than the 12, but that is because I usually yak open ocean.
THAT being said, if the Trident is in the budget, I'd lean that way, it was designed as a pure fishing yak.

But these are my prefernces based on how I use them...

Not to say if you paddled any of the others and liked them, they could not be easily customized to your prefernces, which is sometimes better but more time consuming.
