ahahaha i was joking with you my man,, i dont have the 6" or even 10" (extended) gaff that the regulars have,, but they seem quite friendly and reliable, every time i hook one there they never hesitate to bring their gaff and give me a hand

Re: Bakers Haulover Inlet - 2010 T0 2015 Fishing Reports Onl
DISCLAIMER:
This post is a report/venting session
Report part:
I fished yesterday morning/afternoon. conditions were windy and rough, but at least the jetty wasn't crowded and the occasional saltwater shower from water crashing over the rocks provided some relief from the scorching sun. Anyways, this was my first time fishing haulover on a weekday thanks to being on summer break from college and I was looking forward to little boat traffic and limited fisherman. I got my wish "For the most part" . I spent most of my day fishing for mangrove snapper and was quite successful although most of the fish were undersized/borderline, but it was fun to keep the pole constantly bent with hungry 10 inch snapper on the other end. I managed a couple 11-12 inch fish that I invited for dinner later that evening and let the rest swim to fight another day.
Venting Part:
Oh I almost forgot. The part when I said "For the most part". This is why I can't stand going to haulover sometimes. The nerve of some people! Let me explain:
When I arrived around 9 am, I would guess about 6 people were there fishing. I respected their space and did my best not to disturb them. My patience paid off when most of them left an hour later citing "the fishing is no good" and I was able to get the one little corner that I wanted. By this time there were only 2 people on the jetty including myself on an OUTGOING TIDE meaning that MOST of the jetty was fishable.
I cast netted a decent amount of pilchards and an older lady came up to me asking for a pilchard. I had plenty and thought nothing of it, so i gave it to her. Later on I noticed her catch an undersized mutton fishing the channel, which she promptly threw into her cooler It bothered me a little but I'm used to seeing this over there. I thought to myself, "I'm not giving her any more bait.", and kept on minding my own business.
Soon after that I start chumming and catching mangroves in my own little corner. I'm at my cart rerigging and out the corner of my eye, I see this lady pick up a rod and a bucket and begin walking towards me. I'm thinking there's no way she's coming to fish in my spot. Sure enough, she sets her bucket down right in my spot and begins to bait her rod. I confronted her of course, to which her response was "You cant tell me where to fish. You don't own all the fish." On top of that, she was going to drop a chicken rig with a six ounce pyramid sinker right in my slick where i was freelining.
So me and her are arguing for a little while. I'm telling her how disrespectful and inconsiderate she is and she has the whole damn jetty to herself and she's telling me that she's been fishing here for "years" and that since other fisherman have done that to her, she could do it to me. I told her: "You only want to fish here because you saw me catching fish." she says: "i never saw you catch a fish". I'm thinking "really? Over 100 yards of jetty to fish and you want to fish in the same 5ft spot I'm fishing in?" Out of frustration, I tell her if she tangles me I'm cutting her line and i then go grab my knife and put it in my pocket.
By now I sense things are getting a bit out of hand, and then I suddenly remember that she kept an undersized mutton. So I calm down, take the knife out of my pocket, put it away, grab my cellphone and tell her, "I don't need to touch your stuff. I'm just gonna call FWC and they're gonna fine you for the small snapper you kept." At first, she says "I don't believe you", and then leaves from my spot. she goes back to her spot where she removes the snapper and tells one of her family members to take it way (probably to her car or something). I never actually called FWC. I just wanted her to get the hell out of my spot.
She left me alone for the most part after that until right when she left she said: "You know what I've been watching you and you're over your limit."I started laughing and said: "really? do you even know what the limit is?" And I told her the limit for all the snappers which I know by heart because I've been fishing for them for "years". She finally left mumbling something under her breath.
The sad part is mangroves can be caught from almost any part of the jetty and she was so fixated on my spot because she saw me catching them. If she had been fishing there for "years" she should've known that. The nerve of some people.
VENTING PART OVER.

heheh, sometimes i just go there and hang out with friends, oh yeah of course, to watch 10 rods throwing at same spot for permit.. best part, when the tides running, some "seasoned" (not your average googan) fishman would throw a line out for permit, then disappear for 2 hrs to catch mangrove,,, i can go on and on

Super windy, so pretty uncomfortable to fish. Was out there for 2 hours, ended up with 2 macs on live mojarra. 2 jacks on jigs and decided to call it a day.

The wind was on and off most of the day, but the water was nice, kicked up and sandy. So off I went in search of mackerel. Overall it was a pretty good Sunday morning. Ended up with 2 nice sized and a smaller mackerel. Also kept a couple jacks for the deep fryer.

Well, water temps arent cold enough to send the perms offshore, but they almost always mix in with the pomps here and there..but its warmer than usual this time of yr

it was cold,, it was raining,, it was calm,, i knew the "regulars" will be staying home, so i sneaked out and bought live shrimps and the $2 crabs.. to be honest the few hours that I was there, i only caught grunts.. then before I say "fugg it" and go home with my buddy, BOOM! caught this 17" 3lb sheepie on the biggest shrimp i have left.. and 2 minutes later, my rod with the crab that been sitting in the water for almost an hour, started screaming.. 23lb juvenile.. my buddy almost felt in the rock cuz we didnt bring the gaff thinking we ain't going to catch shi**t..

You probably came across a stray..but definitely good conditions for sheepies...surprised you didnt get more. When it warms back up again, perms will be out and about...but inconsistent. Theyll show better in feb n march mixed in with the pomps

Nice catch! Why drive all the way down to the keys. Head to your backyards plenty of them here.
Outside temps might have been 50 but water temps are in the upper 70's and west palm in the 80's. Pensacola its about 65.

boy them white grunts.. probably there were thousands of them, sheepshead didnt stand a chance.. i wish i had the fiddler crabs or fleas. i am too lazy now to dig them, i usually just exchange my friends (the regulars...) for fleas with a bottle of corona....snapperfanatic18 wrote:You probably came across a stray..but definitely good conditions for sheepies...surprised you didnt get more.
