Anyone have a tree ???
OR know where I can buy a tree?
There is no substitute, though many products come close - real key limes are a thing of beauty.

Guys, my Mom has been making KeyLime pies for many many years, we lived in Key Largo. My sister still lives there and makes pies and cookies that are delicious.
According to family legend there is no substitute for fresh Key Limes actually grown in the Keys, and the closer to Key West the better. Trees not grown in the give Limes but the flavor is not the same. There are commercial Key Lime juices available, but it just ain't the same. My sister has been experimenting for several years for a substitute, has her own tress, but when the Key Limes are not in season there just is no substitute according to her. Shes tried all kinds of ways to save juice, freeze dried fruits and rhines.. but it ain't happening.
Good luck Cookinman on your adventures, but your best bet is get Key Limes fresh form Key West, next is juice from Key West Trees.

You hit it right on the head !!
I have a great recipie for key lime pie that can be made with any lime juice. Professionally I just bought key lime juice, as I had to make em by the boatload for a while there. The product was not terrible, quite good even...just not the same. It is hard to get any lemon or lime juice presqueezed that rivals fresh...If there is such a thing I have never found it...In fact I have a great way to make candied limes and lemon rinds for garnish ( yes, the real version of those "sugared Oorange slices" we all loved as kids)
Key limes ARE the only way to get that real key lime flavor....Tomatoes from Italy and New Jersey (* Lemons too ) yields flavor unique to where they are grown...grapes are especially known for this as well, even ifthe same plants are brought ot different areas....specific temperature and sunlight has a big role in the fruits developement of sugar orlack thereof....even vines from the other side of the hill do not yield a fruit identical to the same plants on an alternative side.
Since I cannot run to the keys everytime I want a pie...lol... I am looking for as close to the real thing as possible....key limes grown up here.
I saw these too, Mojo....kind of interesting...I wondered what dwarfing a plant does to the fruit. Prolly yields a decent fruit - plants are pretty easy to engineer I am told.
Stormrunner, I think for the most part $49 or so is the going $$. Let me know if you want, I have a few bannana trees that yield FAT and sweet Banannnas.
Be happy to break you off a sapling or 2 - they multiply like rabbits ! Also my pineapple crop is down to a doz or so budding plants ( wife got tired of seeing em all over - at one point I had like 3 doz...lol ) I can spare one or 2 tops to start a Pineapple place for you if you have room...
Lemme know and I will bring em over when I 'finally' hook up to swap those reels....lol

I use 100% pure ethilic alcohol, I want something close to 35-40% of alcohol level, not the commercial thing at 20% that tastes like a (barely) alcoholic lemonade

Ya, that is what I figured. Grain alchohol ( Brand name 'Everclear" is 194 proof) That is the stuff....there is 100 proof Vodka availabe, but I imagine the end product will not be the same. Unfortunatley here in Florida only the 151 Proof ( 75% ) variety of Everclear is legal to be sold commercially.
