Post by gdm phil »

Well guys I will be back doing our weekly trips for forum members as of Nov 8th, dropped the boat off on sat for a 225 opti install. should have it back this week, some added benefits of this motor will be better fuel economy, faster boat in general and more power.

just in time for cobia season guys!

That is a good motor with allot of power. Didn't realize the cobes were around, are you getting them on the bottom. Your trip is in two Sunday's which should be enough time for the wind to die down.

Good to hear Phil. I'm about to pull my hundred on both of mine. I'm upgrading the injection and ignition software as well. Thinking I'm needing new propellers. My WOT RPM's are still low by about 600 R's after tweaking my trim angle. And my top end is still about 53 knots. Should be running around 62-6400 RPM's, and I'm at 58 at opti trim. Not the end of the world but it does cause major problems long term. Motors will " make oil" meaning the oil level starts to lncrease and the oil becomes diluted by unburnt fuel. Dipstick smells like your gas tank. Leads to crank failure. So make sure your running within design parameters. Breakin is important as you know and most recommend no WOT for the first 10 hours or so. Good luck bud.
Nice Boat! Now get it outa my driveway!

That is the most recent way I've heard to break in an engine. The first oil change is a pretty major step so you can get all that crap out of the crankcase.

Unless it's a race motor new tolerances tend to be real tight. The whole idea is to seat everything, not just the rings. His theory about gas pressure pushing the rings out is a bit silly as well. It's not an O ring and doesn't perform as one.

He also forgot to mention that most outboards now a days have memory logs. They keep track of how fast you run your motor and for how long. Instead of just hours, now you know what kind of hours were put on the motor. Breaking in a new motor against factory speck will void the warranty.

He says he's done 300 motors like this, no problem. Mercury dealers have done several hundred thousand, no problem. Personally, I'll listen to the people who will be honoring my warranty. You can put some rare earth magnets on your oil filter.
