How can I fish more sucessfully?

I have fished headboats in NC and Fl and I always bring my own gear and live bait, I have a much better sucess ratio that way. I will be down in the keys in March and I was hoping to get out at least once, and I would like to maximize my potential for catching fish.

Does anyone have any tips for me? I plan to stake out the back of the boat and troll hair jigs, possibly with a ballyhoo as we move. What can I do to get into some gamefish on spinning tackle when we are stopped? Large live baits under a baloon? I have seen this done, but dont know what kind of tackle it requires.
