another awesome trip on

Post by gdm phil »

Jumped on the lady K/barjack yesterday afternoon, after speaking with Capt bruce at 11am he said the dolphin bite was on.

Got to the doc at 12 and we had 6 anglers ready to go. so we were off!

FIrst stop I jig a bit, got a solid hit but I feel my drag was to tight so he spit the hook. few minutes after that Phins on phins on! we ended up with 6 I believe.

after the excitment of the dolphins, we hear Lee"s reel screaming up front and in the distance see a beutiful sail danicing on top! lines in and the chase was on. after about 20 min we land the sail measure and into the box she goes for dip!

all in all a great day on the water. rough going out but calm once we started the drift.

on to the pics

Awesome trip! I was on the LadyK a few weeks ago when Lee caught a sailfish (which eventually broke off). That guy really knows how to work a flat line.

everyone is entitled to their opinion. is it illegal to keep a sail?

57" minimum size limit; no closed season; one per person per day limit

if you dont keep them thats up to you, The gent who caught this one and kept this one released 3 that week as well.

now question are you going to make a post on every boat thread when someone keeps a sail? seems like bill fish are becoming like religion. everyone always has a diff opinion on the matter.

SaltyDog, You have no idea what you are talking about. Have you ever fished on the Lady K?

I've been on that boat when one of the regulars caught a sailfish. The captain and crew did not encourage him to keep the fish. They didn't gaff it either. But if the customer wants to keep one, they will oblige him. It's completely legal. If you don't like it, take it up with FWC.

If you've had a bad experience on the Lady K, then provide some details. Who was the captain, who was the mate, when did it happen? Otherwise, you are just talking out of your ass.

I know it's not a shot on me, but I do feel obligated to defend a bout I visit at least 6-8 times a month.

Ralph is right. JJ would never do that, he's working for fwc. Bruce won't even keep a fish that's an 8th short. And Danny is to new. I would also like to hear your experience on the lady k

Ralph- Yes Salty does know what he is talking about. He is referring to a small sail that was gaffed last year. I saw the video. Just an observation. (it was posted in this section)

Now on keeping sails. I never did but I'm not saying I never will. I have eaten smoked sail and it tasted great! Don't bash me Salty!!!! :biglaugh:

I'd like to see the video. If it really happened, I'd talk to Capt Bruce about it. But we need to know who was the captain that day. Al has retired and JJ has joined FWC. Danny wasn't driving the boat last year.

The video was taken down but someone did capture the still images. It was on FloridaSportsman and here. If you are curious read old reports in the Partyboat section, its there somewhere.

Ok, I did some digging into the old posts. I apologize to SaltyDog. He does know what he's talking about.

That incident happened back in 2008 and it looks like Capt. Bruce was driving the boat and posted the videos, although I didn't see the videos because they were removed.

I'm surprised because I've been on trips where Bruce was the captain and a sailfish was caught and he was very careful about how it was handled.

This also explains why they don't post photos of caught sailfish on their Facebook site or the website.

I've been fishing on that boat for about 3 years now and I've never seen them do anything illegal. In that time, Capt Al retired, JJ took over for him and then got a job at FWC, and Danny has taken over for him. Bruce is still there. These captains are all employees. They don't own the boat. I'll take your word that Bruce made a mistake 4 years ago. It seems like he learned his lesson.

I don't get the argument that I'm supposed to boycott the boat because of one mistake 4 years ago. If it still bothers you, boycott the captain, not the boat. The other captains had nothing to do with it.

It's not that easy to catch a sailfish on a drift boat. If I ever catch a legal sailfish, I'm definitely not going to post a photo of it, but I will enjoy eating it.

SaltyDog wrote:I never fished the boat but we have already established that. It's this simple if you don't want people to comment negatively well then don't post it on a public forum the old core of this site is gone or those guys woulda said something too. As far as it being legal so is harvesting sharks(certain species) but there are no pictures of dead sharks allowed here because for some reason someone decided that wasnt what this site was about i happen to be against both. Don't tell me that boat doesn't do illegal shlt been around a lot longer then you guys and i am telling you they have been brought up before again go4em touched on that. Russ why eat a sail theres so many kingfish you can eat raw :jester: Those head boats take no responsibilty in their actions and people wonder why they don't see numbers like they used to if the conditions are right sails are very easily caught if everyone kept em it would be like finding a big bull mahi you dont see them like back in the days because everyone keeps legal sized peanuts. I can can go on just legal grovers muttons tails how many times a week do those boats go out and hit the same damn reef? Don't tell me i'm talking out of my a$$ I do not troll or just makes comments to get a rise out of people. Snook were almost gone in the 80s because of loose regs now they swarm the beaches in the summer why because tighter regs were put in place again its a free country and its my opinion if you don't like kiss my a$$ and dont read it or make sure you aren't talking out of yours when you reply ask your buddy if it happened next time you're out on it.
There's right and there's wrong, it's not as debatable as people are making it out to be. It was stated that the pic of the dead sailfish was lame. This is CORRECT. It doesn't matter that it's legal, that's not the point. There's no need to kill a sailfish just for some stupid fish dip when you can either use kings or buy some at the store for $7.95. IMHO, people should stop ignoring the obvious, which you state pretty plainly. And yes those party boats hit the same reefs day in day out. Nice post and nice points

Smoked sailfish is DELICIOUS, much better then kingfish or AJ. I could care less if you keep one for the table, it isn't like there is any shortage of them. Just be prepared that you'll get flamed if you post pictures of it.

In my opinion... I personally do not keep anything I consider majestic, especially when they take about 5-6 years to reach sexual maturity. I am still very surprised they have not outright outlawed harvest. Just let them go, keep some king fish or amberjack if you want dip.

Seems like aj would be a totally different taste. King dip is the only one I have tried that I know of.

Man, it seems like SaltyDog has something out for Lady K. What they did to that sailfish YEARS ago...is wrong. But to hold it against the boat 3 years later? If your going to do that, why not do it to SEA LEGS? And if it's all because of the fact someone caught and kept a sailfish, GET A GRIP SCOTTY! I mean HONESTLY, get a fukin grip!

Sailfish is LEGAL, it is DELICIOUS, not our problem that you've never eaten it. If your against people eating sailfish...how about STOP eating SNOOK...snook is a gamefish! Hypocrite!!

:stupid:

My friends ran and crewed on charter boats and head boats when I was a young un. Back in the 'old' days when it was not a sin to keep a sailfish ..... the best part of selling a sailfish mount was getting back the smoked meat. Nothin' goes better with :toast: :toast:

Yeah the same can be said about sea turtles, apparently they are mega tasty. But is it right to harvest them? Sorry everyone, I have a soft spot for Sailfish

The difference is the wild sea turtle population cannot sustain harvesting. In the Caymans, they farm raise green sea turtles for meat. Sailfish, on the other hand, are not endangered and their population in South FL is very strong. Now I'm not advocating killing every billfish you catch, but keeping one once in a while will not matter. Just because they are pretty, I guess people have a soft spot for them? There are lots of "majestic" fish out there that people eat. It is not uncommon at all for them to come to the boat dead, either due to being gut hooked (even with a circle) or tailwrapped, if that ever happens to me, you better believe it is coming back, instead of becoming crab food.
