Well I wish I could say we slayed 'eem but today the fish won....

Started it off okay with a small blackfin on the trolling rod not too far out of the pass this was after Dennis (I think I have the name right) got a undersized grouper on a deep diver right as we cleared the jetty and of course it went back regardless of size since the season is closed.

It was pretty sloppy out there and my new rain top got a good test....was very glad I had my Gruden's and boots on as water was always sloshing thru on the rear of the deck soaking anyone that did not have good footwear.....many normally wear sandals but with the cold there were a lot of wet tennis shoes and cold feet.

football sized Blackfins.... one here and two there came up on a few stops.... no AJ's although there were several suspects lost... ( lost my first jig with a fish attached when a good one took me to school and I was unable to stop it before it found the bridge-span we were over and it cut me off )

still it was great to meet some new guys that share that passion called fishing and learned a few new things witch always makes for a good trip even if the fish don't cooperate.... next trip for me will be Sealeggs the end of the month

Yeah, thanks for the write up Rick :toast: I forgot my camera and my weather gear this time :( All in all there were around 12 football size blackfins caught. Lots of brid action but the tunas were too scattered. Two massive hits were lost the one Rick mentioned and one from a guy named Mike.

There were 4 blackfins caught on 4 ounce black silver diamond jigs. My son and I got our two blackfins trolling the small squids. The rest were on vertical jigs.

Lots of new toys out there (from other people) so I got to play with some Blackhole 250 gram rods and Stellas 10000SW. What a sweat combo but the rod is too stiff for my likings and the owner's likings as well. The rod it self is as light as a feather.

When I spend a full day( 6 hrs or so) jigging I usually get smoked by 1 or 2 fish like that. It sucks, alot, but also makes you want to get after them that much more. To ease the pain a bit though I just think of them as being jewfish, and not an 85lb aj or 60lb black. Sounds like all in all a good day though, can't complain about blackfins on the jig. Thanks for the report.

Glad I didn't pick that rod. Kilsong caught 220lb Bluefin with a 200g proto type rod. lol! Did the rod size work on the boat? 5'6?

The Capt said when I was talking to him that the nice BF (I think in March or May) in a few month he wanted to try in a few spots that he knows they hit well.

IMO those rods were made for big tuna. The rod size was ok, I still prefer the longer rod and I believe Greg did as well. With the shorter rods you seem to loose a bit of that recoil for the lighter jigs. That 250 gram rod seemed better for 300 gram jigs and up. It was the girth of a lobster tickle stick and stiff as one too. It would be great to fish big amberjacks and getting that big grouper out of the hole.

That's what we said on the boat too :) It's painful to see a good hookup like that end up on broken knots or frayed lines. Even if it is not your self.

I have to agree. It was tough jigging with my black hole rod but I plan to move back to houston one of these days so it will get some good use on some yellowfins. I also got some 300 gram jigs to try next time. When I was jigging with the black hole everytime i let the rod tip down I had way to much slack in my line.

Ended getting a spinning setup to use on the sea legs trip.

Bet that rod would do better on the heavier type Jigs...400gms or so. Get to the bottom first and get the firs reaction strike.....hmmmmm..... something to think about.
