What lures/types of lures do you guys use?Please help

Where are you fishing and what are you fishing for?

Every person is different on the type of lures they use. I usually carry assortment of different lures in my back pack.

Gotcha - I use this lure for an all around search for fish lure. Macs, Bluefish, Snook, Mutton, and Kingfish. Silver/ Red and Yellow/Red has work for me. Moderate to fast retrieve. Sometimes I twitch it during the retrieve. If water is deep enough I jig with this lure. I do not allow the lure to hit bottom since the trebles will snag the reef.

X-Raps and Yo-Zuri - Works for most species of fish. Moderate to fast retrieve. Sometimes I twitch it during the retrieve. I try to match the lure to pilchard, greenie, mullet, or sardine. Also, depending on the light condition will determine which color I use. Bright days with no clouds and flat calm water I stick with light colors. Dark colors for rougher or over cast days. I usually have shallow running lures.

Kroc Spoons - One of my favorite lures when fishing the surf. I use 2 1/2oz. This allows me to cast out far. Rapid retrieve and pause. The strike will happen on the fall.

Bucktail Jigs - My favorite go to lure out of my whole box. I like using the Sparo style jigs. I have all sorts of weight depending the current and the depth the fish is holding. I vary the retrieve but most the time is jig jig pause jig. Develop a cadance when jigging. There is no right or wrong way of fishing this jigs. I keep a lot of white, chartreuse/ white are great for low light. Some dark back color with white.

DOA Shrimp and Terror Eyes - This is still new to me and have not master the art of using the DOA. Shrimp I use it drifting with the current and occasionally I snap the rod tip to simulate a darting shrimp. That will trigger a strike. Terror Eyes I just jig with it and bounce it on the bottom. I usually fish light tackle using DOA lures. Terror Eyes I have done well in the Rootbeer colors. Just try to match the color to bait and depending on the clarity of the water will determine if you use light or dark colors.

Great advice Bolo You really cleared up some things on jigging for me. I had a friend tell me to let it hit bottom give it one pull then back to the bottom again. He said this was the only way to fish one and that there was no way to catch a fish with a jig working it any other way. Needless to say I jig fished using this method for a while and it was unprodutive for me and I had almost given up until I had read this.

Any other tips on jigging for a beginner?

Your friend jigging cadence is not wrong. Sometimes you have to change to interest the fish. If I'm fishing of a boat drifting over a reef for bottom fishing I will let the jig hit bottom and slowly lift my rod tip up and let it fall back down. This will get a snapper or grouper to hit. Also too if I'm using a jig that is heavy it is difficult to jig quickly as the jig has to rip thru the water and settle back down. A slow lift work better sometimes. If I'm targeting Kingfish, Jacks, or Cobia I usually fish a faster cadence and let the jig sink during the pause and repeat. If I'm on the pier or beach the water is probably shallow with a lot of reef or rocks I can not allow the jig to hit bottom or I will snag. If it's sandy then let it hit bottom. So like I said before there is no wrong or right. Always try different cadence and watch the fish reaction. Always watch your line during the fall and pay close attention when jigging. The hit will always surprise you.

Thanks Bolo. One more question please. When jigging how long will you pitch in one spot? Am I wasting my time with 20 to 30 casts. I know you can't give an exact number because each scenario is different but how long do YOU usually hang out at a spot jigging?

When I used to Bass fish casting lures I was taught to fan cast. Basically work the area like a clock sort to speak. For example if I'm fishing of a pier I start out at 12 o'clock and work it back. Always all the jig to sink. My next cast will be at 1 or 11 o'clock. You're starting to get the idea. You want to cover as much water as possible. Once done I start to move down or up the pier. Just like a X-Rap you are using the lure to search for fish. Once you hook up and land the fish I would cast back out to the same spot. Work it and then move.

Well 1 of my favorite lures is the xrap hothead. You also can't go wrong with a white bucktail. DOA shrimps, I haven't master that and I don't think I ever will I don't have the patience to reel in really slow like you're supposed to.
