Suggestions on conventional rods for pier/bridge fishing?
Just got a Penn 113HSP reel with a custom 6'6" rod with roller guides from a friend. Is the rod good enough for pier/bridge fishing or should I get a longer rod to get some distance from the pilings?

I would go with an 8 ft rod for casting. You can range from an Ugly Stick to a Star to custom for choices.

Yes, I would go with minimum 8 ft, maybe 9.

Thanks guys. I will ask for one of those at the tackle shop.
Is there a difference between spinning and conventional rods? I'm assuming the backbone or strength are at opposite sides (top vs. bottom). Visually, is there a way to differentiate?

There is a huge difference in the two, how the guides are lined up on the spine. Also the guides tend to be different as well.

Yes, spinning rods will have much larger guides, that is the easiest way to tell them apart.

Ah, the guides. Yes. I should have thought of that. Now I know. Thanks again.
