Guys I know it all depends on what beach and weather conditions, but sometimes (for pomps, whiting, mainly) I see posts that people reccomend use a 4 to 5 oz weight. I fish exclusively in the panhandle gulf. Mainly Mexico Beach area or Destin,FL. Mexico Beach is just east of Panama City. All I use is a 1 oz lead sinker at heaviest. Granted on the average calm sunny day. I just get an easier feel for the fish, even if the bait (shrimp) rolls a bit. Does anyone else prefer the lightest weight possible for mild conditions? Also, I fish wading out a few feet off the beach. I'm not talking from the pier of course.
Another thing, I never use a 8-10 foot rod, it's hardly neccessary for above fishing. (since I have the rod in hand walking in 2-3 feet of water. What do yall think?
Thanks for yalls input and/or advice in advance.

Fishing with shrimp you don't need much lead if the seas are calm.If you are on a pier with small bait fish you need at least 4 oz. lead, bigger baits 6 to 8 oz. lead so your line doesn't go crossing other lines. On the beach , you don't need much, i like to freeline my baits on beach.

My preference is free lining.
I understand you're looking for a particular weight....
You should weigh your options...
If surf casting is involved... I start with 1/8th - 1/4oz jigs tipped with shrimp.
If you are deciding on using a bottom rig... sure... I never needed more than 3oz in 3-5ft surf.
Heavy surf means heavier weight.
I always say "Less is better."
Give the lesser weight a try and then work up the weight necessary.
Good luck.
