Non boatless/planer question

The other day I went to try a house planer and it worked great. However, when I was sliding down an ilander I wasn't sure if the main line was reaching for the end of the planer line or if the main line was already there and the line coming off the spool was just making a bow behind the boat. How do you know if the main line reaches the house planer?

I think you have to judge it by your own estimation...

Idk, it felt like it kept going, and there was only fifty feet to the planer.

a small bow in the line wont kill you but measure it out when your dropping it

try in-line planer. No, not sporty, but it is meat fishing anyways.

Pretty much.

As your finding out, cleaning a planer off is kind of a pain in the ass, it's just easier to rig it inline and handline the fish in.

If you want the sporty aspect of it, buy a used downrigger. The penn fathoms are all over the used market real cheap.

I'll measure arm lengths, that's a good tip gruntking. We were already using a downrigger and had about 50 ft out to the planer. What length would you guys recommend for a 130-240 depth?
