Getting fish back from the Keys

Post by ahaga09 »

Hey guys,
My wife and I are coming to the keys in June from Carolina and are flying Southwest to Ft Lauderdale. Any tips for getting the fish back home once I freeze them? (That is if the good Lord blesses me with catching a few.) I have seen where people check a cooler as luggage but wanted to see what yall thought. Thanks in advance

I'd get a styrofoam cooler of sorts, if you can find one of those cube shaped ones made of solid stuff like the pack live lobsters in at Boston,, not the elCheapo convience store versions, pack it good with dry-ice eliminating all the dead air space, seal it up good with packing tape, label it well.. and check it or carry it on.
Problem could be TSA may want to open it if you try to carry it through, so pack additional sealing/packing tape.. and not sure about regulations when shipping dry ice.
I used to bring a few lobsters with me on the plane to a buddies house in Atlanta, packed them frozen in a small cooler and bring it on board, but I did not care that they defrosted cause they were for dinner.

Check out bait shops also, normally they sell boxes designed for shipping bait/fish. When I worked for a tackle shop we used them all the time. They are wax impregnated cardboard with Styrofoam box inside. That is the best option plus they have all the markings on the box. I don't think they will allow dry ice as a carry on but I could be wrong.
