Is there any must haves I should be on the look our for?

I've been on line and saw lots of interesting freshwater lures (cool floating bugs and locusts lures). Also tons of saltwater stuff but it's also very expensive. Want to look at some blanks to ship home maye for some builds in the near future.

It may be hard to shop just blank in Japan. Custom rod may not be so popular like US...
There are so many small companies that builds many good quality product...but yes, price will be much more expensive than US...

Well there is a guy who used to be on BD aka Bloodydecks.

His Nick is Capt G aka Greg Vella.

He lives in Japan and has developed swimbaits and all kind of artis. He also builds top exclusive rods and has or had a shop with several builders. He worked as a freelance for the Japanese press and brought Largemouth Bass fishing really up in Japan. His Buddy caught the to date biggest LMB on one of his rods.

I searched but cannot find his location in Japan. If you dig thru BD Outdoors forum or search the web you might have more luck than I did.

Dude is a genius and knows all bout rods n lures.

That would be the only one I know who is in Japan besides noodles

Of course blank production is much bigger in Japan than in US...
Korea used to be biggest but now of course China is biggest... Many good rod building companies poop down due to China... But quality is Japan and Korea...What Japanese is really good at is carbon prepreg sheet that is technology...like toray carbon... I heard NS blank hole outsource all of their Nano carbon carbon prepreg sheet to a Japaneae company that is the secret...

Yep. Kil Song is responsible for Cape Cod Model and success of NS black hole in US market. Cape cod brand is most popular NS black hole model on US.
Probably Kil Song is the only NS BH guy people in US know...But I know the real man (Mr Shin) called "shark guy" in NS black hole who is responsible for building and designing actual NS BH blanks. And he used to design Shimano rod before NS black hole exist... Most Japanese and Korea fishermen knows and gives him lots of respect...he is celebrity fishing star in Asia...lol. I seriously doubt how many people in Asia really know who Kil Song is...BTW, Mr Shin told me he likes Cudaman a lot...lol

Yep I have been busy...but he is too big fish for my 200 yard of 10LB line...lol

Mr Shin released a special slow jigging blank (from his best designs) for Herbert, who has been testing this blank for all of his fishing trips in last 12 months.

This slow jigging blank will be co-branded by cudaman and shark...and of course, carefully produced by NS black hole in Korea under Shark Guy's attention.

Herbert really likes this blank not because of his name on the blank but because of its actual performance. This is one of rare blank that can handle 80-450g of jig weight. He used 500g jig last reward trip to catch two grouper back and back.

I showed this blank to Jeff at T&R. He really liked blank but he hated slow jigging so that he told me he wanted to build something else...l have no idea...lol

I felt I derail your thread a little so here is my two cents.

Salt water fishing method by actual local Japanese is very different from US...
I bet you will be surprised to see there are so many kinds of floating fishing bobbers and supporting accessories at salt water section and most salt water rods are telescopic or multi-piece rods (3 ~ 6 meter). They are catching 10 ~ 20 LB porgies off the cliff using 10LB line with 6 Meter rod using floating LED bobber...There are tons of fishing gears that you've never seen in bass pro... Probably, most common is bass fishing because it was imported from US...

I would recommend to buy common metal stuff like hooks... (Japanese carbon steel is the best)
Japanese fishing industry is well known for quality hooks...In fact, their porgy fishing requires sharpest and strongest hook.
You could find some best-quality made-in-japan hooks from never-heard small companies at good price (may not be as cheap as bass pro).
But most hooks in domestic Japan tackle shop may not have eye like in US...

Also Fluorocarbon shock leader line is good... YGK would be most popular brand as fishing line brand in Asia... it may be pricy...
You could buy braid but probably want to stay away from mono line... I believe most mono lines there are coated so that bobber can slide thru it better.
And I think those mono line may be floating unlike mono line here.
Line is categorized as diameter not test LB...so #4 line may be as strong as 30LB or as weak as 20LB.

Sashimi knives (maybe or fillet) can't go wrong... I have one...(but no matter how good it is, you have to sharpen the knife over the time)
I like Japanese line snipe/clipper too but most local Japanese are small and have small hand...lol
Also, they sell some kinda of spray to extend longevity of your braid line...
LED light used in deep drop boat fishing at bass pro is freaking rip off... if you do deep drop, you may buy them in Japan far cheaper...
But you have to buy LED and matching lithium battery. If you don't do deep drop, don't even bother as most fish in FL is afraid of light...
If you are lucky, you may be able to find nice handy/portable rod holder that can be used for surf fishing...
If you want to be cool, they have telescopic net that can extend probably 3ft to 20 ft. But check the actual net diameter. Most may not be that big for snook if you do snook fishing.
If you can find net big enough, this may be a good thing to carry for pier or bridge fishing.

If you like vertical jigging, you could buy nice jigs... Japanese believes they originated vertical jigging but Mr Shin doesn't agree at all...
Actually, many VJ people in US ordered jigs from Japan paying lots of shipping cost.

Thanks for the replies guys. This will be my 6th time over there and I've only gone into a tackle shop once and its overwhelming with all the stuff they have and the prices being through the roof.

That's a great tip on the hooks and metals over there. I probably wouldn't have thought about that, and the main purpose of this tread to get my head in the right direction before I go. Thanks Kblue

Try to look for rod building components, get you a mudhole catalog for price reference. The catalog you could order on line and get it in less than a week.
