Florida golden crabs

Post by Jabie1313 »

Hey folks,

Where is a good source for getting golden crabs? Preferably live.

there used to be a seafood market at the festival flea market on sample road in Broward. They used to have tanks with live golden crabs, but I am not sure if they are still there. I have not been there in a long time. If you live in that area you might want to check it out.

I was told at a seafood store in Hillsboro Blvd, Deerfield, which used to carry them, that the fishery was closed due to damage to deep water reefs.

I guess I'll have to poke around and see if they are still available. I heard that the fishery was limited to only less than a dozen people actually fishing them commercially. Hard to believe that the entire fishery would be closed though. Maybe they are all wholesaled out of the state to just a few places.

The market was very lmited and fishery pretty tough. The few guys I knew years ago doing it got out of it. The goldens just never caught on down here for some reason.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

I went by Penn Dutch and spoke to the guys behind the seafood counter. They are out of golden crab right now but said they will have them again after the holidays for between $4.00 and $5.00 a pound, Good price compared to snow or king crab. I will be going back for sure.
