Thoughts on those Waxwing lures?

HI all, just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the Shimano waxwing lures. Personally, I have not caught anything on them, but I believe if I were to use the shad color then I would be in the money. I have only used mackerel and sardine, but only used them when the gotchas stop producing. From what I have seen, the action is as advertised and looks great! It even makes the birds go crazy, I think I just have been using them at the wrong time or just targeting the wrong fish. Im usually just blindly casting lures into the ocean from a pier, usual catches are macks, ladyfish, and bonito, but on the gotcha jigs.

I've had waxwings since they came out. Action is good and they are dense and I can throw them a mile with the braid I have on my set-up. Same results you are getting. I've thrown them blind casting and covering allot of water, used different colors but no real results. I've used them when jacks were around, blues and macs but no success. If I switch to a repella or gotcha then I would hook up with the targets. Like I said the action is good and you can get allot of different presentations out of them depending on the retrieve- slow, fast, lift, twitch but my success rate has been real low.

I have only heard of success with them for basically vertical jigging on calico bass , rockfish, and yellowtail in the Pacific.

Such a shame since they are so expensive and the action looks great. I think it might have to do with color combo and making it look similar to the bait schools around. I have a couple of rapala and yo zuri lures that look like scaled sardines but have not used them yet. Tested the action in my pool though, and they look great also.

I was given 2 of these these top water lures (waxwings) as part of a deal and my thought is that they are great fishermen catchers and not fish catching lures. I have seeing so many use it and not get a bite. I have used it in water boiling with bait getting ripped by jacks and bluefish and also in the same scenario offshore. Not even bonitas have followed them. They may work somewhere else but haven't had any luck around here. Their other products are better, like the sashimi ones.

If you want to try something nice try the X-rap subwalk. It walks the dog under water if you know how to do it, and comes in proven colors that catch fish not fishermen. Unless you snag somebody or yourself. Yozuri also came up with one that hardly lasts any time on the shelves.

I have used them from the beach on rough windy days and have caught some big jacks in the wash with them,, I also used them out on the boat when we hit a school of dolphin but when the dolphin are in their frenzy they will hit about anything you throw,,, I still throw them when the wind is kicking and its hard to cast anything else,,,

What is the name of those yo zuri lures? I guess ill try to look for some online. Ilove fishing with artificials. From what I have seen online, a couple of people catch nice size jacks from the surf with the wax wings.

SASHIMI SLIDER- sinking version<---This is the one I was referring to. The X-raps are much cheaper.

I pretty sure you are referring to the X-raps because the silver (mullet color) and the bone white color are good colors on them. I like the Ghost color as well, the completely white one for dark nights. I am pretty sure that kings and macks would go crazy on these as well since the smaller ghost and sardine colors work great on them.

no cudaman the waxwing lures out due xraps at the bridges 5to1 it just depends on the conditions every lure has its time to be used next time you snook fish at a bridge thats worth anything throw a waxwing and reel it down the shadow line and tell me how many time you get bumped or hook a fish then throw an xrap and tell me how many times the fish just look at it 8)

Done that many times. Waxwing = 0 X-rap and other plugs, stick baits, pencil baits = many to count for. It just hasn't worked for me. My poppers have worked better too, and it's hard to get fish to hit on poppers. I fish by my self 2 times a week and with other people 1 or 2 times a week as well. I can say I have tried many, many lures and the Waxwing just has not produced for me. May be for you and many others but for me and the people I know, it just hasn't worked with any action we give it.

It all might be an issue with lure appearance and the way different anglers fish the lures. With waxwings, I reel them in as fast as possible because they are advertised to be fished with their much faster reels.

Haha well then I guess all of us just need to get over the learning curve of these lures. My guess would be medium to fast retrieve with a slight jerk every couple of winds to give it a nice side to side erratic action. Ill go out tomorrow at the Skyway and see if I can produce better than the gotcha jigs with these. Unfortunately though, the only colors I have are the mackerel and sardine so we will see how things go.

Went to Anglins yesterday and got my limit on macs..... tried the waxwings again different sizes different retrieve different colors.... waxwings zero fish two hits... yo zuri.....half of my limit then lost the lure... gotchas made up for the rest. My luck with the waxwings is limited to below satisfaction.. go figure...

We were there too.

To other people, don't go crazy buying those Waxwings, all the fish above were caught on crappie jigs, crippled herring, and white bullet jigs. After I lost one crippled herring I decided it was best to keep on loosing 20 cents crappie jigs :jester:

pinoyboykev, please do let us know how they worked for you. :toast:
