Bermuda chub....pure garbage. No good for bait or eating.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

whatever you take home you should eat, in this case it doesnt apply but for future reference. Its bad fishing karma. jetty's advice is solid as well.
Don't know it...throw it or touch it for that matter.

Not completely true...I've caught several nurse sharks on them. Using garbage to catch more garbage.

The problem with writing about religion is that you run the risk of offending sincerely religious people, and then they come after you with machetes.

This is a mutton snapper. A complete different species from red snapper and mangrove snapper. The biggest snapper I believe is the cuberra which can grow over 100lbs.

Since it seems to be all the rage to dig up old post lately I though I would dig up one.... but a important one to many of us...

It is that time of year when there are a large amount of juvenile kings being caught and kept as Spanish because they have yellow spots....
quite a few fishermen including many with years of experience do not know how to tell the difference so here is another old post that has some great info....

http://forshorefishing.blogs.theledger. ... l-easy-id/

The quick and short version is this.... if the fish shakes like crazy ( I know all fish tend to thrash when they are being lifted up to the pier ) but a juvenile king goes ballistic and shakes like mad even after he hits the deck.... this is my clue to very carefully check the lateral line...... it takes a very sharp dip on a king and just slopes down on a Spanish....also the Spanish tend to have a black dorsal and a king has a grayish one but the lateral line is a sure thing
so be careful and let the small kings go so we can have large ones to play with later...

Man next to me caught a Striped Mojara. I never saw one before. Looked like a striped pinfish. Lines like a Striped Bass. Is it uncommon to catch them in the Siesta Key area?

I caught them on the flats the one time I ever waded for bonefish...and the pair of majaras I caught that day were the only two fish I caught (Bahia Honda Park)...I did see one bone and my consolation prize was that I didn't spook it on the cast (which I hear is almost always an automatic when casting to your first ever bone) - instead it just had no interest in what I was throwing :-(
