Surf Fishing

Post by CORALREEF »

Hi, I just moved to Coconut Creek. I am a surf fisherman from Long Island New York and I am looking to do some surf fishing in the Pompano to Deerfield area. If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated. Just a couple of Questions, What fish can I catch of the surf and what is the best bait or lure used. Like in New York they are different seasons for different fish caught. If you can tell me what fish are caught in the summer time and in winter time that will help. Again thank you for your help.

Right now is the best time to fish! There are schools for bait coming down the beaches.

You can catch macks, bluefish, snook, red, tarpoon, sharks... and the list go on....

For winter it's usually pompano, bluefish, and whiting.

Summer, I don't know.

Go to the beach right now!!! No joke, this is the VERY best time of year to surf fish! Spoons, plugs, plastic swim baits. Live bait of course too. Look for bait pods being hammered by 5-100# fish.

I lived 5 years Stony Brook, LI... I fished a lot there...

For surf fishing here, use your striper rod, right now, you may want to get/buy live finger mullet. and perhaps 5/0 J hook.
You need to spot a pod of bait moving...specially mullet pod.
Just cast out over the pod...

You could also catch pompano... you need sand flea. Hooks have to be a foot above ground.

all of the above..plus the fish here are not as far out, so you really do not need a 11 or 12 ft surf rod..like up north..as far as lures.....also weird.. but the generic metals work here fine .....jsut go throw soemthing out you will be amazed at what bites......way more than just blues, stripers and weaks.......blues will be here too though,

Thank you for all your replies, they were helpful. I was told that I can not fish most of the beaches is that true? I went to Walmart and purchased a shore fishing license. Can someone direct me to a beach or beaches that allows surf fishing. You don't have to tell me your favorite spot just a place to fish. I can read the waters and trust the tides. I am sorry if I am asking to many questions but this is the only way I can learn , how is the bay fishing down here ? Fisherman down here are more helpful than up North.

I would suggest traveling north to the Port St Lucie area Much better surf fishing and few restrictions like down here. Don't overlook night fishing with crabs for permit.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

You can fish wherever theres not lifeguards pretty much from ft lauderdale up. and where there are lifeguards, you can usually fish before they get there (the good times to fish), and after they leave. You can go online to see the technical rules for each beach

People here are the bestest. Makes me want to blow off my weekend plans of work and go fishing somewhere up here.
