Here is a quick and easy way to make retractable safety lanyards for all sorts of tackle.
Finished product.
Here is how to make it.
Cut an approximately 8" length of 1/2-3/4" dowell and drill holes as shown. Insert 300-600# test mono or heavy weedeater mono thru one hole and wrap tightly to the other hole and pass the other end through and pull tight.
Drop mono and dowel into boiling water and boil for 5 min. Remove from boiling water and drop it into ice water until cool. Remove coiled line from dowel and add the type end fittings you need. Attach with leader sleeves.
This is Fishing Tip # 717 from fishcatching101.com (By the way, the site is not up and running yet but I hope to have it functional soon. This tip came from E-book #8. Books 1 thru 7 are complete but I have a way to go on # 8.)

Sorry for the late reply. If you put the line under a lot of tension and leave the tension on it a while, you will loose the coil. A quick pull like a rod going over won't cause a problem.
I have one on a pole spear that is more than 30 years old. It still works.
