Quick First Aid for Broken Guides

I was on my way fishing one morning with my son. Our gear was in the back of his truck. Getting into a place where we could walk to the beach, he hit a big bump in the road, upsetting out live bait bucket. When the bucket full of water landed on my surf rod it snapped off two of the guides.

We found a tackle shop near by that had guides for sale - not a perfect match, but close enough, so I bought two. However, we could get no thread to wrap them onto the rod - so I bought a roll of plastic electricians' tape and wrapped them with it - stretching it tight as I did so.

The tape-wrapped guides held up well all week long which was fortunate as it was the only rod I brought with me that trip. Later, when I returned home I wrapped those guides with thread. But I kept the guides and always take them, along with a roll of electrician's tape in a plastic bag when I'm traveling.

I've never had to use them again but a few weeks ago one of them saved the day for another fisherman at Sebastian Inlet when he stepped on and broke off a guide on his casting rod.
