How to bottom fish on anglins pier reef

Post by bigyellowtuna »

I have no clue....posted the question on the pier thread and only got a suggestion to fish off the reef / the leading edge. I want to fish right on it without loosing 100% of my rigs. Any suggestions? Would it involve one of those trolly rigs?

Losing rigs is part of the game of bottom fishing, if you're not losing gear you are not fishing the right area. You can try to cut down on your losses by using a lighter line for your weight, usually just your lead will pop off. Also, how light is your main line? I would go at least 30 lb main line for bottom fishing the reef.

Also, when you cast, once your bait hits bottom, leave it there. Don't drag it around. When you are ready to check it, give your rod a good upwards sweep to get it off the bottom, then reel quickly to bring your bait in.

I normally use a fish finder rig, so my line naturally breaks where i lose everything. What rig do you prefer in this situation? My main line is only 20 lbs....not sure if 30 would uproot a rock any better than 20, though i have seen remnants of rock on the pier that have been pulled up. Thanks for the advice...will give it a try.....if i can get free time from the wife and kids. One other thought....would a heavier weight be better since the bait would be more stationary or does the same rule as offshore fishing apply--use lightest weight that holds bottom.

You want to make sure you are using enough weight to keep you anchored..I use at least 4 oz for bottom fishing. Usually any lighter and your weight just gets swept around until it finds a snag.

Use the lightest weight that you are able to cast to the area where you want and sits on bottom. Phishinphanatic's info is great.
