Jig Use How to

Post by BoatlessFisherman »

Jigs are very different and how you use them is also different, It takes time to learn the feel of where your jig is in the water depth but in time it become instinctual, and working jigs is no different from working a live bait.

Troll right with Live Shrimp on:
Work the depths of the water by your retrieve, Faster Retrieve=shallower, Slower Retrieve= Deeper, once you locate the depth of where the fish are hitting, slow steady retrieve at that depth.

Side winders and Sparadic Jigs:
Are retrieved at a fast or slow retrieve and with Many or few Jerks. The faster you retrieve the higher you will be off of the bottom. Fish that like sidewinders, Mackerel, Jacks, Blue Runners, Cudas, Pompano if it is work on the Bottom.

Bananna Jigs, Goggle eye bugs :Jerk up and allow to flutter down.

Pompano Jig, Redfish:
Bullet, Ball, Flat Head, Snake Head
These Jigs are used with a light or heavy exaggerated flip of the tip, the hit is normally on the fall.
Speed of retreive determines depth and it is always best to tip the jig with a little piece of shrimp.

Bucktail jig:
I use a 1oz to a 3oz
You can place a live fish or Shrimp on to improve your jig.
This is used in inlets on the jettys.
At change of tides 1 hour before and 1 hour after or so.
I cast out off the point of the jetty and retrive steady, the faster the retrieve the Shallower the jig runs.
This is good for Snook, Redfish, Tarpon, Black Drum

Cobia Jigs are Similar to Bucktail, they have flutter Heads on them so they flutter a little more and have tails, use when sight fishing cobia they will hit on the fall so toss in front of them and allow it to drop right in front of them.

Hope this Helps, the Boatless Fisherman
