Help a hand lining Googan

Post by Poseidon10/31 »

Last week I bought a 6" yo-yo that came pre rigged. Cut off the rig and added my own hook/weight and have not had any issues with this yo-yo. Problem is it only holds 75 yds of 60lb mono, so I bought a 9" yo-yo and spooled it with around 300 yds of 60 lb pink ande to use for tarpon and sailfish.

I used it on the beach for snook and was having tangle issues. Every few casts it was getting twisted and forming loops. This wasn't happening to the other yo-yo and it is spooled the same direction and I cast and retrieve it the same. Not sure why I have this issue with the one but not the other?!?!

I spooled the yo-yo just as you would a conventional reel, the line went onto the yo-yo the same way it came off the spool. Only thing I can think is that when I spooled the yo-yo I actually spun the yo-yo mimicking the spool of a reel rather than keeping the yo-yo stationary and using my hand to wrap the line around it. Is this causing the issue? How do you spool a yo-yo (if you actually use one)? I did it this way so I could put more tension on the line when I spooled it to pack it tight, but maybe that was a bad idea...

I was casting it in the park and had zero issues there, it was just on the beach. Since then I stretched the line out and re-wrapped it, removing the twists. Any suggestions for a googan would be appreciated. Tight lines.

Never use a yo-yo but my guess would be spool it like a spinner reel as that's how it comes off the yo-yo.
