Hog Snapper

Post by mmcauliffe »

If I wanted to target Hogfish, what pier in this area would be my best bet?
The problem with writing about religion is that you run the risk of offending sincerely religious people, and then they come after you with machetes.

Anglins or Pompano would be my choices. Live shrimp on clear water days on the edge of the reef line in spring or summer.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Anglins always seems to produce some, usually to tourists with frozen shrimp. I didn't catch a hogfish for my first 8 years of fishing down here and wanted to badly. Then last year right about this time I got 2 in the keys within 15 min of each other on live shrimp. I haven't gotten one since. I have seen a couple nice ones come up on crabs that were intended for permit too.

The few hogs me and my friends have caught have been on days when the water is crystal clear. In the keys we actually sight casted one. I guess i'd say anglins.

PM GatorKong. He loves Hogfish and seems to know where to catch them on Anglins. I have caught all my Hogfish on Crabs and Shrimp. I only catch them as by catches. If I tried to target them I probably wouldn't be able to.

There have been a few brought up lately at Anglins. Under the pier between the mid hut and the T on live and dead shrimp. I got one last week and it was tasty. And there was a tourist that got one the other day on a dead nast shrimp but it was undersize

That's true Zebco, most of us already know it's not a snapper but that's how it's commonly referred to...hogfish and hog snapper. I can't remember the last time I heard someone say they caught or shot a hog wrasse. Actually it's a Lachnolaimus maximus but who's keeping score?

Like everyone else said clear waters. But not always. I saw one caught at Anglins by a guy fishing with a yoyo, using squid and very cloudy waters. It was very frustating since he was not 5 feet from me and I was fishing with shrimp. I said all that to say , usually those not fishing for them and not wanting them usually catch them so if you want them don't fish for them. :D

8) Didn't know they allowed yoyos there. I will send some business that way.

Stop being a racist. They don't like to be called yoyo.
