Let me get on it Bolo I'll have something later this evening. I do know there not letting just anyone do the clean up and they will only allow specialists to handel injured anamals. But I can certainly find out. One thing I will say to everyone is neither BO or the Gov is charging anyone for this training. Any org. that IS charging money is a scam.bolo wrote:It is time to do something about this oil spill. This oil spill will reach our shoreline soon. I want to see how many people are willing to step up and help. We are currently researching which organization to join that can provide the proper training to help us remove the oil safely. Tommy, James380, Fishnfool, and I will be a part of this clean up. We will like to see others join and not sit on the sidelines. You don't have to be a member of BF or fisherman to join. Your passion to help clean the environment is enough.
Crash and Rob762, i know you guys are resourceful. Do you know of any people we can get in touch with to get the proper training?

Re: Volunteers Needed for Oil Clean Up
Most places that train you for the oil spill clean up requires you to pay out of pocket. If they do not offer it to volunteers for free this clean up will not happen.

Re: Volunteers Needed for Oil Clean Up
This is for anyone who actually wants be involved with the actual hands on spill clean up effort. I'm waiting on more info butthis is what I have right now. Untrained volenteers will not be allowed to come in contact with the actual spill. Here is the full article below. I will post the training dates and locations as soon as I get them.
I'm waiting on an email from the hotline # below. Basically you give them your contact info they send you some forms. Background, experience and so on. They use that info to decide the best way to utilize your abilities.
I'll keep you posted
BP to offer training in conjunction with OSHA and the Coast Guard.
Health, Safety and Environmental Training has been a key focus to properly prepare those interested in participating in shoreline clean up. The training is fit-for-purpose based on whether you are a volunteer, contractor or vessel owner. The Post-Emergency Spilled Oil Response Training Modules were prepared by Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), with review and approval provided by BP, Occupational Safety & Health Administration and US Coast Guard personnel.
The training is for those registered in the Vessel of Opportunity program or as a contractor who wants to participate in clean up. The non-contaminated beach clean up "volunteers" will receive a basic BP health, safety & environmental orientation which as been endorsed by OSHA and the the Coast Guard.
To be included as a volunteer, please contact the BP volunteer hotline at 866-448-5816. Your contact information will be gathered and you will contacted when opportunities arise in your area. If you are interested in assisting in shoreline oil spill clean up operations, and you live in one of the coastal states (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama or Florida), you can request placement in a spill response course by emailing Horizonresponse@pecpremier.com. This course is not a guarantee of employment but provides credentials needed to be hired for spill cleanup work by BP contractors.

Re: Volunteers Needed for Oil Clean Up
Ok I am offically in contact with the Horizon response team what ever that means. In any event they will be contacting me according to their email to inform me of training classes and organizing the response. I'm hoping they are not blowing smoke but we will see. I did manage to find out that all of the training will be FREE. They also said that any group or company that is offering traning for a price is not connected with them in any way shape or form. Both BP and the state are training for free. I will be contacting the states response group in an effort to submit our desire to help. Right now my efforts are focused on training. The first responders and emergency management groups I have spoken to are looking for trained personnel. In an effort to facilitate this I urge everyone who want's to be involved to send an email to the website and request training. The more requests they have in an area the more likely they will have classes there. Just give your name, address, Contact #s and request training. Here is the Email add. mailto:Horizonresponse@pecpremier.com

Re: Volunteers Needed for Oil Clean Up
Since I'm in the Pest Control business, I wanted to relate some info that may, or may not, be inpertinent to this discussion.
In regards specifically to the licensed wildlife part of it. A year back my wildlife license was deleted and no license is needed to handle wildlife. All you do is add yourself to a list that that state keeps on file. You need to state what types of wildlife you handle. the exception to this is alligators and large nuisance snakes.
It may be that you need to be a part of one of the local wildlife rescue resources to handle threatened or endangered species (think herons, eagles, etc). And it is probably best to offer help in those resources since they are always short staffed anyways. Here is the contact info of Wildlife Care Center...
Wildlife Care Center: The Center rescues, rehabilitates, and releases native wildlife that has been harmed or displaced.
Address: 3200 S.W. 4th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315
Phone: 954-524-4302
They are just north of FLL airport and just south off of St Rd 84.

I spoke with Tommy yesterday and promised him I'd make a thread about this. This will be a great oppurtunity to learn the FACTS about this disaster. And we figured we could hit up a nice local bar afterwards for some beers. Let's get there early 'cause it's FREE, but LIMITED SEATING!!! spread the word ASAP

Re: Volunteers Needed for Oil Clean Up
Here's the response I got back from the SurfRider Foundation:
Hey James
If you are interested in helping with the FL clean up effort you will need to get trained and then activated by volunteerflorida.org
Contacts and Updated Oil Spill Volunteering
To report oiled wildlife, please call 1-866-557-1401 and leave a message. Messages will be checked hourly. Individuals are urged not to attempt to help injured or oiled animals, but to report any sightings to the toll free number.
To discuss spill related damage, please call 1-800-440-0858.
To report oiled shoreline or request volunteer information, please call 1-866-448-5816.
If you are interested in volunteering for oil spill related clean up, the main website to check is www.volunteerflorida.org. Opportunities will be posted as they become available.
If you want to be on the front lines you will have to take the new 6 hour OSHA training being offered. And, you will have to be hired by BP; they will not be allowing any volunteers to work directly in cleanup efforts. As an employee you are covered by their insurance, volunteers are not. They are constantly updating OSHA training schedule here:

For those under 18 or who can not get the training in, this is what I will be doing - putting on rubber dishwashing gloves, grabbing old 5 gallon bucket, walking beach looking for tar balls, fill bucket, drop bucket off at nearest BP station.

Re: Volunteers Needed for Oil Clean Up
I am 100% serious about dropping it off at a BP station. What else can I do with it? We cant throw it in the trash so that it ends up in our land fills, then decades later its back in the water. I know I cant be the only one thinking like this, BP will have to set up drop off points for tar balls, or its going to the stations and they will have to figure out what to do with it. Lets all just hope that we do not end up walking the beach with buckets and gloves.

There's probably some law that would get us arrested for dropping hazardous waste off at the BP.

Ya I left that open for that question to be asked. So far there doesn't appear to be any laws against it.

I would tell the officer that I was just returning their lost property. Could you imagine the phone call to the police and their reaction when they went to the station? "Some guy in a red mini van just left a bucket of tar balls and trash at my gas station!" "OK, we will send an officer out to take a report. Where are you?" "BP at the corner of ...."
It would be as funny as the guy who calls police cause somone just stole his weed.

People taking manners into their own hands in regards to the OIL DISASTER
Is not what the country can do for you is what you can do for your country.
I know that the government has not responded to this crisis appropriately . But U.S. society now in days waits for the government to tell them what to do, we need to take initiative and push our local government to respond not wait for the feds to get to the party late as they always do.

Re: Volunteers Needed for Oil Clean Up
From a Keys Spill e-mail:
Here are the details for tomorrow night:
The executive producers for Katie Courics CBS evening
news are flying to Key Largo tomorrow and will be shooting
in Key West on Thur for a special segment about
the "passion" of the Florida Keys volunteers in their efforts
to protect the Keys environment from any potential oil spill
impacts.
This is a "feel good" story about our volunteers (that's you)
the Florida Keys environment and people.
They will make it clear during the story that the Keys is
thriving, unlike our Gulf Coast neighbors to the north,
and that we have done more than any area in being prepared
to keep the Keys safe so that it will always be the Sport
Fishing Capital of the world.
This is our chance to show millions of people
nationwide that the people of the Florida
Keys will do everything possible to protect
the reefs, marine life and our eco-system.
If you care about the Keys please go tomorrow
night at 7 PM to the Amphitheater at the Florida
Keys Community College 5901 College Road....bring everyone you
know to show your support for the Keys way of life.
This story will air Monday night on CBS news with Katie Couric
and Steve Hartman.
We want everyone there!!
Thank You
