Mangrove hunt

Got bored Saturday and did some night fishing for some mangroves in ICW spots. Ended up with a few shorts and a few in the 14-16in nothing fancy. Ended up with a nice surprise on live shrimp as soon as I arrived to my first spot. I thought I might have hooked into a big cubera since the fish made no attempts to jump. About 7-10 mins into the fight on an ultra-lite set up ( tiny #3 hook almost straightened) I land a 38' snook. A fun fight but I would much rather it been a cubera

It was a beautiful night and a slight breeze kept the insects away.

Nice fish. Yesterday I hooked a couple of small tarpon on light gear and a broken back rapala. They pulled the hooks fairly quick though.
By the way, I read in the paper last week the snook ban will probably be lifted in monroe in august.

Sweet bycatch. Are you finding decent size shrimp at any bait shops?

To be honest, the store where I've been getting them have been... Eh. If you buy a dozen, they'll throw in a couple of large ones, a few medium sized ones and the rest are probably small enough for the fish to get offended when they see em on a hook.. I'm talking freshwater shrimp size. I understand the store doesn't want to give all of their large ones out and be left with the small ones that no one wants but.. good lord. They've been mostly smaller ones. About 4 months ago the smaller ones started.

Things have changed, when I was a kid and buying bait a dozen shiners, minnows or chubs meant a net full which easily could have been 2-3 dozen, you don't see that anymore. Even when I bought shrimp here in Florida 30 years ago a dozen was net full.
